Subject: Halo: Reach needs to be...less cartoonish...

This would be a good time to point out that the US Government seriously did consider nuking the moon during the Cold War as a show of force. Project A119.

"A large explosion on the Terminator line would put the sun behind the mushroom cloud, making the explosion visible with the naked eye from Earth."

Then the US decided they'd just send in Neil Armstrong to land on it. Neil Armstrong - the one man on the earth that was considered a suitable replacement for a nuclear missile.

Halo 3's graphics looked like something that would be on Cartoon Network. Reach should have a darker environment, with more realistic blood.

For example: You snipe an Elite, he drops, tiny pool of blood.

Fixed example: You snipe an Elite, he drops, pool of blood slowly forms from his head, you walk over and can see the bullet entry and exit wound.

Halo is an M-rated game. Why not take advantage of that? Halo is supposed to be about Humanty's fight against the Covenant and the Flood. These are alien races, and they should be made to scare the hell out of the player. Bungie, you would sell so much more copies and would attract so many more fans that I can't believe you haven't done this already.

Thoughts?

Between playing Halo and World of Warcraft, I must be the poo-bah nerd.

Blood and gore make game good and fun.

I saw nothing wrong with the Halo 3 graphics. It was a refreshing turn from the gray on brown atmosphere of most "HIGH-END GRAFIX" games nowadays.

What? Halo's art style is great, your ideas sound gimmicky and stupid.

Idiot...I wasn't saying I knew what Reach's graphics looked like. I simply looked back at previous Bungie games and realized they all, with the exception of ODST to some degree, were very "cartoonish". I assumed Reach would go the same direction.

I couldn't agree more with you, OP, they should also change the combat lines of marines/enemies appropriately. And Elites need to speak elite, not english. And more gore can never hurt.

The elites don't speak English. They speak whatever their native tongue is, the Spartan's just have translators in their helmets. In Reach, it would most likely be broken English or sound like a bunch of religious zealots.

A game should be about the gameplay, not shader effect, high polygon counts or any other kind of irrelevant nonsense

Dude, ODST runs on the same graphics and physics engine as Halo 3, its going to look exactly the same.

That's why I said to some degree. The visor effect seems pretty cool.

Their neural implants (that metal chip thingy abobber in the back of the oddball) include translators, just like they include a comm system to talk with other marines close-by.

Yes, really

nah, i like how halo isnt all realistic and what not. allso great for a slight decrease in lag

  • 06.09.2009 1:25 PM PDT

Signatures are for squares.

I'd love to see a colorful game, but with alot of blood, like it was in halo 1, every shot made to someone without shields left blood, unlike Halo 3, where only the killing shot leaves a tiny drip of blood.

No, because the Havok game engine probably could not do a lot of that stuff you mentioned. Besides this is Bungie's own unique style. Making it all gritty and "uber-realistic" would just make it blend in with the rest of the crowd.

Graphics should go up a little but not to much to lag the game or give it problems,

It's interesting that there was recently a study done concerning gore in games.

One thing they found was that players end up tuning out any graphical details such as blood spurting following their initial exposure to the game.
The second important thing they found was that excessive amounts of gore and graphic violence actually makes a game less appealing to players. This was in contrast to the feedback they got from the players taking the survey who had indicated that the fealt having more realistic blood and gore made a game more appealing. The stastics on the popularity of bloody games ended up contradicting this assertion.

Excessive blood and gore is nothing but a gimmick. You think you want it because playing a game with lots of blood makes you feel slightly edgey and cool. Beyond this initial reaction to the game the blood adds nothing to gameplay.

Halo doesn't need it.

I totally agree, but I don't want them to go as far as GoW did, I want it to be at least realistic. Gears was nothing like RL.

Now, if you get shot by a rocket, there should be bits and pieces :D

Time flies like an arrow; fruits flies like a banana.

Yes, and the only colors should be grey and blood-red!

Halo is just fine to me. No need to change a working formula.

They should bring back Halo 1's death physics. When you sniped an Elite, he dropped to his knees, then to the ground. In Halo 2 they 'lifted' off the ground briefly then fell flat. I really didn't like that as it didn't seem realistic. I much prefer Halo 1's death animations.

I think you're forgetting that thing called "armor" and these things called "Helmets" that blood doesn't penetrate when someone is shot.

You're thinking of Gears of War, this is Halo. I don't see how it's "cartoonish" at all. And I don't see how an alien parasite reanimating or forcibly taking over and mutating a marine is cartoonish....

Bungie, you would sell so much more copies and would attract so many more fans that I can't believe you haven't done this already.
No, the opposite would happen..... If you hadn't noticed, alot of Halo's sales are to kids under 15, whose parents have to give them the thumbs up to get it. And not alot of parents are appealed by unnecessary gore.

  • 06.09.2009 1:36 PM PDT

Personally, I love Halo 3's graphics -- different from the standard steel/brown that plagues most FPS's these days -- and how colorful and, well, "fun" it is.

Though, the player models seem to look a lot like plastic. I heard this was the case because of technical limitation of sorts. I've always though the graphics could've been a touch more subtle =P

My dad is.

No it doesn't, Halo's graphical style is great because it doesn't conform to what every other game looks like these days. It needs to stay the way it is. Halo isn't a horror game, it's a science fiction game.

It's like a retard riding a bicycle while eating hot wings.
Sometimes you have to take the bike seat off to really enjoy it.

I wish they would make everything unshiny.
EVERYTHING IS SHINY IN HALO 3.
Just something I wish they would fix.
