Subject: Halo: Reach needs to be...less cartoonish...

I am flatterd that you botherd to look at my signature.

i disagree with alot of things when people come to graphics..

in GOW2 the graphics don't look any better than halo3.. in my opnion..

hell they glitch all the time and marcus is missing his mouth...

and what good is gore with out gameplay? first go for fun gore can just be a bonus..

(halo is the most family friendly M rated game)

most parents let kids play halo cause it is firendly to alot of people..

other games are usely made for the select few...halo has a bigger range of what kind of players it attracts..

Bungie's uniqueness is one of the reasons they're the best. I prefer Halo graphics over COD or GOW.

I wish they would make everything unshiny.
EVERYTHING IS SHINY IN HALO 3.
Just something I wish they would fix.

Last time I checked. Rocks, dirt, grass, leaves and other objects were not shiny. You want shiny look at Perfect Dark Zero or Gears of War. Where they bump map everything to the point that it looks like it's rubbed down with crisco.

WTF? Why do people want dark and gritty worlds? Do they have eye problems or do they live in run down cities with ghetto, out of date buildings? Things are no where near that bland and grey in real life unless the sky is grey. On a sunny day everything looks nice, bright and green, in the field behind my back yard, and that is how I envision a forest in Africa.

As for gore? Ok... Who cares? Spartans are in tough Mark suits with bonded bones meant to be unbreakable. I'm sure if you hit them hard enough something will come off, but it doesn't really matter when it comes to gameplay. You have to add proper weight and physics, and you have to make proper adjustments to the game engine. I don't think Bungie has the Unreal 3 engine optimized for multi threaded and multicore development, or the know how of how to use such an engine to full power like Epic. Not to mention the Halo world is already filled with models, enemies, and objects. Add gore to that and see how well the levels hold up during multiplayer. I wouldn't mind some gore as long as they don't overdo the whole thing like Gears with pools of blood. Just be happy we can knock the Flood into pieces.

I couldn't agree more with you, OP, they should also change the combat lines of marines/enemies appropriately. And Elites need to speak elite, not english. And more gore can never hurt.

The elites don't speak English. They speak whatever their native tongue is, the Spartan's just have translators in their helmets. In Reach, it would most likely be broken English or sound like a bunch of religious zealots.

But people who arent spartans can here them too, and they didn't talk in one

Their neural implants (that metal chip thingy abobber in the back of the oddball) include translators, just like they include a comm system to talk with other marines close-by.

Yeah, but Elites can speak English too.

Your friendly and eccentric Sangheili forum-poster. :)

Yeah, for a 15 rated game compared to others Halo 3 seemed like a kid's game. I want to see a lot more details this time.

Also, since this takes place on Reach, I think a "dark grey dull appearance" would suit the game's atmosphere anyway, since Reach is done for from the very start, and some of the grey would give a past like feel.

Ok
first off the halo:reach trailer is a game teaser.
no gameplay.
none.
usually teaser trailers have better or differant graphics to the actual game

Well, I live in a Scottish harbour town, which for the most part is very nice, depending where you visit.

So a nuked-out destroyed place that's grey from the smoke of many fires is a nice change of pace for me.

Though, being Scottish, so is warmth...

No, because the Havok game engine probably could not do a lot of that stuff you mentioned. Besides this is Bungie's own unique style. Making it all gritty and "uber-realistic" would just make it blend in with the rest of the crowd.

lmao, yes, Havok, a physics only game engine, powers all of Halo.

....r u ready to die?

i know 4 a fact that alot of parents let there younger children play halo BECAUSE of the lack of blood and the fact ur fighting heretics and parasites......either wya there should probably be an option 2 turn on blood and gore just to attract a larger population of gamers

It's interesting that there was recently a study done concerning gore in games.

One thing they found was that players end up tuning out any graphical details such as blood spurting following their initial exposure to the game.
The second important thing they found was that excessive amounts of gore and graphic violence actually makes a game less appealing to players. This was in contrast to the feedback they got from the players taking the survey who had indicated that the fealt having more realistic blood and gore made a game more appealing. The stastics on the popularity of bloody games ended up contradicting this assertion.

Excessive blood and gore is nothing but a gimmick. You think you want it because playing a game with lots of blood makes you feel slightly edgey and cool. Beyond this initial reaction to the game the blood adds nothing to gameplay.

Halo doesn't need it.

BLAH BLAH BLAH I SAW DIS STUDY ONCE AND IT SUPPORTS ME VIEWS AND I HAVE NO LINK TRUST ME PLZ

halo 3 is obviously meant for little kids. why else is everything made of plastic and rounded edges? halo 1's graphic style > halo 3's graphic style.

  • 06.09.2009 3:38 PM PDT

Underwater Eagle.

I don't mind it how it is. I hate Gears of War for the sole reason that it goes way overboard in the blood department and I find it unnecessary. Also, doing artwork for entry and exit wounds in any part of the body is pretty time and labor intensive. Considering that it would add little to the game, I think that this would be a bad idea.

Halo 3's graphics looked like something that would be on Cartoon Network. Reach should have a darker environment, with more realistic blood.

For example: You snipe an Elite, he drops, tiny pool of blood.

Fixed example: You snipe an Elite, he drops, pool of blood slowly forms from his head, you walk over and can see the bullet entry and exit wound.

Halo is an M-rated game. Why not take advantage of that? Halo is supposed to be about Humanty's fight against the Covenant and the Flood. These are alien races, and they should be made to scare the hell out of the player. Bungie, you would sell so much more copies and would attract so many more fans that I can't believe you haven't done this already.

Thoughts?

I agree and disagree here.

This Cartoonish style you speak of is probably the factor that there isn't much battle scarred to the Multi-player Spartan armor such as the war torn Cheif and the lush colors that the artists a Bungie skillfully put together.

I agree with the lack of gore but I disagree with the gritty and grey bs like GoW.

Halo 3 is perfect for the factor it has rich color that doesn't make you feel like you're colorblind. Though I wish the gore was abit more realistic and the blood as kicked up alittle more. I rember in Halo one I would shoot a grunt with a UNSC Pistol. See big splatter of colorful blood. As for bullet entry points and such. I would like to see that. I mean in Call of Duty and all that stuff. I have seen what a M1 does to a guy. Not very exciting anymore. I would like to see what a .50 Caliber does to a Jackles face or a Elites skull. Or any other Species of the Covenant I shoot. Maybe a rocket to a drone and causing the bug to explode into green blooded bits. Halo 3 could have more gore and war-torn battle feilds without resorting to gritty and grey. They have proven in some of their campaign levels.

Also being a M-rated. Yes that is true but due to a factor that this will never be probable. Is the fact that a very large portion of Halo players are underaged. Playing the game when they shouldn't. Either way it would be a finacial suicide risk to pull that off. Maybe a special Directors cut ya that some how works with online.

Like theatre mode. On my screen a body falls face foward but on my buddies screen it falls down on its back. If this is do able why not a extra gore feature that can be down loadable via-xboxlive or content cd of some sort. That way parents have the option of making sure their children are not exposed to extra gore.

Either way thats my thoughts on this subject. I might drifted off topic alittle but ohwell.

Armor Lock isn't overpowered. You just suck at Reach :)

Reach isn't bad, you're just a BK :)

For my gamertag, look up "Ghoulishtie"

How about get over it?

  • 06.09.2009 5:13 PM PDT

Oh yeah It's Rayzed.

Did you just say it would be on Cartoon Network? Are you high? The game looked great, everything was just shinier opposed to the dark dank areas of Halo 2. This was done to show the beautifully rendered environment easier. The graphics are pretty realistic as far as Sci-Fi goes.

  • 06.09.2009 5:20 PM PDT

I dont see anything cartoonish about halo 3. I've never seen a cartoon with half as many guns as halo 3! If you want to see some reeeeally cartoony graphics, go play LoZ:Phantom Hourglass. Then come back and say halo 3 is "cartoonish"

  • 06.09.2009 5:22 PM PDT

I agree with the more realistic artwork i dont want to see a Gears grey and brown style but not as bright colors from halo 3. I mean the floods home was bright orange it felt like from H2(which i think had the best of all three artworks for the flood) to H3 Bungie hired the guys from Que er Eye for the Straight Guy to make it all bright and welcoming.

First of all, Go look at Halo 1 graphics.. Thats pretty much how the Halo series started. Why move into a Gears of war kind of graphic when they have already established a base graphic, on what halo looks like.

The reason why elites speak english is because of translation software.

Well, no, it doesn't. But things like leaving bullet holes in heads and spraying realistic gore and blood all over might not be possible to do with the current way Halo is set up. And some of those things are, controlled by the physics engine. So my point still has some value.

I really wish people will understand that gore and violence may make you feel superior to that little kid down the street, but it doesn't make the game any better. Sure more blood would be cool, but more than likely if bungie had any intention of putting it in they probably would have done that. I'm pretty sure in the past they've commented on why they weren't going to put in extreme violence. Besides in gears of war the violence is not only gimmicky, but it adds absolutely no value to the game. As long as the game lives up to the previous versions of the series i couldn't care less.

I want the game to go back to the core of Halo and have all aliens (except for those loveable squealing grunts) to speak in their native language. It takes away from immersion when you see this 8 foot monsters talk like your next door neighbor in a deep voice. Long life the Wort Wort!

And secondly STOP SNUBBING GRAPHICS and ART STYLE!!!

art style and graphics create the games atmosphere. Atmosphere is a factor in gameplay!

So yes art style, gore all play towards gameplay.

One of the first 20 to beat Halo 3 on Mythic (Solo Legendary All Skulls On), in the later half I'm guessing
I notice time that light has reflection for, like the rainy magic of nobody else on a lovely day.

They are struggling as it is, alright.

And no, Halo 3 doesn't look like it's from a cartoon. The colors are just more vibrant than most, which makes the aliens feel more alien to me.

Atmosphere = ascetic. Gameplay has nothing to do with the game's atmosphere. Gameplay is exactly what it sounds like, what the game plays like. If i were to add gore into super mario bros. it would still play like mario. I would still be jumping onto mushroom heads and all that nonsense. It has absolutely no effect on how much fun a game is (Hint Gears multiplayer). So no, gore has nothing to do with game play.
