Subject: Natal; Good or Bad?

Is Natal a good or bad thing for an FPS shooter (Reach)? Discuss...

EDIT: So are they going to have NATAL in Reach? According to privet caboose they will, yet he doesnt give any sources, his thread can be found here.

but we know that project Natal will play a massive role in the game.

What?

I would say bad...do you really think the motion sensors could pick up you pulling a trigger? And what about running? In place? Bah.

  • 06.09.2009 3:38 PM PDT

If they can perfect it? Yes

If they cant? No.

My only 2 questions
1) How much movement will u have to do to traverse large maps, ya no? like jogging in place and such?
2) when you spin around quick to no scope someone and such in mp, how will you do that? You'll have to physically turn around...which would make you not see the Tv...

I'm sure that we will still have our classic controller... Bungie will keep its hardcore fans, lol this isn't a wii game. But maybe for cut scenes and such? Do you guys think this is happening? Will bungie use Natal? Continue discussion...

I-Max gaming = win

Lmao yeah, People would have to buy an imax theater for home...actually...that sounds awesome! lol. You'd have people building specific rooms in their house just to play NATAL. Haha

bad for halo. good for kid-wii stuff

Underwater Eagle.

Natal definitely isn't for every game, It will probably have it's own niche in games like Wii Sports, Wii fit, etc. But I seriously doubt that it will make a splash in the shooter market.

I know this is kinda off topic, but not really but...Think of natal with a game like Assassins Creed, How immersive that would b. Lol people would b doin backflips in their house hahaha. But yeah...i think the only way NATAL will work is with an IMAX in your house lol.

you guys are taking natal waaaaaay too literally. IGN just had a "what if" article if natal was used in some standard games. i.e. detecting your facial expressions to determine conversation choices in mass effect as opposed to the wheel... not the entire gameplay. kinda like the wiimote in mario galaxy; the gameplay isnt based all around it, but it does add to the effect. (no im not saying mass effect and halo are the same)

At E3 they said that they want to eradicate (idk if that was the exact word) the controller to make gaming more accessable. They showed the gameplay of someone racing and stuff, steering with their hands.

i actually think that natal is going to be good for this game mainly because bungie can make a character similar to milo and you can talk to it as you play.
for example give out command ask for reinforcements etc.

good point but they're probably gonna take it step by step, the controller will last at least another decade

Right, but what about actual gameplay?

I think it would be retarted to play halo without a controller so of course you will use a controller, i think bungies will be smart enough to integrate them and use natal as a plus to the game.

Halopedia -- The Definitive Source for Halo information

It won't be implemented in Reach, that's for sure.

Unless each copy of ODST has a Natal camera just for the Beta.

Bah, idk. It'll be annoying...i really dont like the idea of natal overall. What if it confuses your voice chat with another player as a voice command.
Your friend : "Alright man, i gotta go"
You: "Goodnight"
*Xbox turns off cause goodnight is a command*
You: "-blam!- my life"
*Xbox explodes*

LOL

to me the xbox is getting more like the wii with the avatars and now with with this motion sensor thing..... but its not all bad it would be good for some games and probally bad for shooters

Some people on the forums, Check "Proof, that i know all of the spartans in the banner. FAQ added" by privet caboose, Say that NATAL will have a "major role" in Reach.

Confused.

Phoenix is dead, long live Phoenix!
Is it?

I believe that there are some aspects of the game that could be incorporated with Natal that will be both worthwhile and work great, with a bit of fine tuning and stuff.

Personally I play games to chill out, I will not buy Halo: Reach if I have to stand up for the majority of twelve hours + of the campaign, my legs would be killing me after an hour, I'm not a Spartan, I'm a lazy teenager who wants to slob out on the couch and shot confetti out of grunts with minimal effort on my part...

The only way a FPS could work with Natal, in my opinion would to have Natal acknowledge a set point as being standing still. If the person is standing half a step forward from this position it would tell Natal that they want the character to move forward at a walking pace. Standing a whole step or more forward would have them running forward. Same with reverse and same with moving left and right.

To get it to turn would be the same, a slight 10deg turn would have the character slowly turning, whilst a 20deg or more turn would have the character turning at full spin. Moving back into the original spot would have the character standing still again. Crouching, Jumping, throwing grenades, Melee'ing throwing or dropping grenades would be quite easy to do. Pulling the trigger would be hard.

However, that is off topic, It would still require me to stand up which I would not want to do. I believe that the main advantage of Project Natal's application in FPS games such as Halo would be best restricted to the additional extras, everything that's not the Campaign and Multiplayer.

Forge would be fun, and possibly alot easier, if Natal could be applied well to it, theatre and the general title screens could also work well.

Could you imagine making things in Forge with Natal, the three axis control that your hands are capable of would make placing that BR correctly in its place, a whole lot easier, pushing that box flush with the other box would also be easier and well, quicker. I get fed up of Forge after half an hour, let alone the three hours in takes me to make something worthwhile.

So yeah, I think it would have its applications and could be used in a FPS, but let the lazy teen be able to slob on the couch and shoot confetti out of a grunts head with minimal ease.
