It will be impossible for Bungie to please everyone with Halo Reach so long as Canon set forth by "The Fall of Reach" is strictly obeyed.
Why?
The battle of Reach lasted two hours, from the time that they first spotted the Covenant Ships in warp to the time that the Pillar of Autumn jumped towards Halo.
Two hours of conflict is nowhere near long enough for an entire campaign experience, unless they split it up into missions that are going on consecutively from the viewpoints of different spartans, and even then, it will be the same location with slightly different flavors. That doesn't make for a super exciting campaign experience as a whole.
So what does this points towards? The campaign may take place over the 27 years from the first encounter with the covenant to the culmination of the game at Reach. This is well and good, but try to remember some of these things. According to Canon:
>The Spartans will not get their shielded armor until a little more than a day before the battle of Reach. The Fall of Reach was their first oppurtunity to use it. If the game indeed does take place over the years leading up to Reach, expect a game much like ODST except you can dual wield, you can run faster, jump higher, and your melee does damage. Essentially spartans in ceramic non-shielded armor. I don't know about you guys, but as fun as the ODST style of play will be, I want to be in epic fire fights that can only be made possible with a recharging shield.
>The Elites were never seen by any UNSC forces before the Battle of Reach. To all you people that are super happy about them possibly returning as the primary badass enemy in the game... prepare to fight nothing but grunts and jackals for the half of the game with maybe one hunter pair only to be rewarded near the very end with some elites. Because thats what the Canon says.
Simply put, this wouldn't really create an exciting game experience, and the prospects of having a game like this almost makes me want to believe the people who say that Master Chief will Time Travel back from Halo 3 to the Human Covenant War and alter the course of the war. Almost. I still think they are crazy, but the line between sanity and foolishness are starting to blur the more I think about the game.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Fall of Reach is a great book, I absolutely loved it all the way back when I read it in the 7th grade and even when I re-read it now as a Senior. But to make this game as awesome as it should be, Bungie should not have their hands tied behind their backs when creating this game because of an eight year old book that was created back when they had their sights set on a single game without thinking of how they could create the universe so that more games could be made.
Hell, I would glady take the time travel option, as cheesy and stupid and hated as it would be, if it led to an exciting campaign. My brain is almost starting to rationalize it as I sit here typing (Bungie started planning Halo 3 before Halo 2 was released, the same must have been done for Reach, so the Legendary Ending might have been setting up for... no... musn't give up... musn't give in...)
The simple solution is to use the book as a basis of what happened and elaborate and embellish the story to turn it into the game. People don't read anymore, the adverage Halo player probably hasn't read the books, what will they miss?
I have given this a bit of thought. I finished my last final today before my graduation and I couldn't obtain transportation home so I was stuck with nothing to do, which is impossible for me, so I decided to put my brain to work examining what they could do with Campaign and Multiplayer.
What do you people think? Did I get some of my information wrong? Try not to flame, just wanted to throw these observations out there.
...And the multiplayer better not be linked to the time period or the canon of the campaign or so help me... I Love my Spikers... not sure what I would do without them... or what about the mongoose? Think about the mongoose people!
