Subject: VISR: colorblind/ color deficient friendly?

Game dev in training.
Ready to deploy approximately Q1 2012.

I don't think this topic has been brought up in any existing thread, so I'll give this my best shot.

Now, the VISR has already been shown to utilize the color red to identify enemy targets and the color green to identify friendlies. In addition, yellow is used to mark points of interest.

I am considered to be red/green color deficient, or colorblind. For those unfamiliar, this means that my eyes are slightly bad at interpreting those two colors. One problem caused by this is that under the right conditions, particular shades of red and green can look the same.

At this point, you should see my concern. Now, judging by the screenshots, I don't think VISR will be a major issue. At least ODST's generally don't look like Brutes and/or Grunts. I'm also under the impression that a handful of Bungie employees have the same condition and I hope that they can make sure it's not a problem.

However, I wanted to get some other people's thoughts on this. In addition, I would think that using a red-enemy/blue-friendly color scheme instead would eliminate any possibility that problems would come up.

Whether you're colorblind or not, what do you think?

Your blood will clean the blood for now.

This is one of those things that people want to do, but can't really do.

Mythical Group

There is no greater catharsis than arguing on the Flood.

Eh, green is the universal color for friendly in Halo. Blue is for neutral (i.e. retacle being blue when not on an object affiliated with either side of a conflict.

Personally, I believe the color-coding isn't the most important part of VISR, just a cool feature. It highlights/grants visibility to the important objects and aids vision at night. (I have night blindness, this might be pretty useful if any part of the campaign get's too dark)

Why is hammer such an asshole?

How about I hammer your asshole.

i understand your concern, but your type of color blind and the people with it in the game will be to few and far between to change anything. it was sort of like skirmish being removed out of matchmaking. It might change if everyone (majority) agree on the red/blue change.

See you at the Aftermath!

I have a friend who has the same problem. the red/blue system is a good idea to fix this problem. maybe bungie could make it a setting so players could choose between red/green and red/blue.

True, but it looks like ODST no longer uses a blue HUD. So, I guess blue isn't being used for anything at the moment, at least when it comes to the interface.

noooooo...

yellow hasn't really been used.

blue is used for the spartan HUD (the main HUD), therefore making it neutral.

yellow is used for neutral in ODST, being that you're no longer a Spartan.

bright yellow is an object of interest.

Four shots, four kills, reload, repeat. This is the work of a sniper.

I think that it shouldn't be a problem, because if it was you would already be complaining, because your reticule is green while looking at a friendly and red while looking at an enemy. I think if that doesn't pose a problem, neither will this.

Headshot... Sticky sticky... Headshot...Stab...Evade Stab Sticky Stab Stab evade Sticky Stab Headshot Sticky Sticky!

i agree.. there should be an option to change the hud color and visor color

... which there is... color blind people rejoice lol

Recon Hunters: ^*Recon*^

doesnt seem like such a problem if you know what an ODST looks like and a brute or a grunt

  • 06.09.2009 8:14 PM PDT

do you really have to look at the outline color to notice its a grunt? but i bet that it would stand out from eachother in case you couldnt

"You must be mistaken, Reclaimer. I've met your makers, and they don't even know your name..."

As long as you can tell the difference between a huge, gorilla-like ape monster and an armored human, you should be cool. That would be quite frustrating, though. I imagine it won't be a problem overall, as yellow or blue is for objectives. The low-light setting is really, IMO, what the VISR is for, although I'm sure as I play other functions will appear to me as helpful. I doubt it will impact your playing the game, though.

How do you think it would feel if some one steped on your face? I think it would hurt O_o

I know lukems is colorblind so maybe they either made a special setting for him or they haven't thought about it yet.

  • 06.09.2009 8:22 PM PDT

This actually has come up before, right after the first footage came out I posted about this being and issue and asked for a colorblind option, noone from Bungie commented so I'm led to believe that they're not going to be doing anything for us about this. As for the people who said that it only effects a few, there are almost 4 million severely red/green color blind people in the US alone, and that ignored the people like me who are just partially red/green color blind so you can imagine that the number is actually quite a bit higher. Even for people like me though the VISR colors were hard to use.

if knowledge is power and power corrupts, isn't knowledge therefore dangerous?
Black Tower

mmm.
i don't think it'll get to you.
i mean, look at the pictures. if you can tell by those what it is, then i think you're good.
therwise shoot brute outlines even if it's green.
:D

  • 06.17.2009 2:57 PM PDT

It would be nice to switch between the two color schemes

They did it in Perfect Dark Zero

Monkey see, Monkey shoot.

Terry Pratchet - The Best.

My friend can't see green, makes thinsg a lot harder.

  • 06.17.2009 3:02 PM PDT

Wow, not seeing green, I could see that making it pretty difficult. I don't know, I mean worst case they don't put in this mode, I'll just shoot anything that moves with the bullet-hose wonder that is the SMG. It would just be nice to have the red/blue option so that say I come up behind a group of marines in cover, I don't miss the fact that a grunt is also in the group.

That being said, if it becomes a problem I'll just start offing marines for ammo, which I usually do anyways

E-mail; save a stamp fire a mailman...

yep, i have the similar color blind deficiency... but mine is between blue and green... =( so i feel what you are saying...

That is a good solution.

It is very difficult to make everything in the game work with things like colorblindness, and deafness, but I am sure they do what they can.

  • 06.17.2009 4:09 PM PDT

I think it'd be a good idea, and do-able (although it might be a little late) to allow players to customize VISR colors however they want.
