I haven't heard one way or the other as to if Halo Reach will be made on a new game engine. Does anyone know? I won't mind if it is just based off the Halo 3 engine with some improvements, but I just thought it could be extra cool with new graphics and more realistic physics. I have a doubt that it will because I think it is being released to soon to finish a complete new game engine, campaign, and multiplayer. But you never know, Bungie is full of surprises!

i agree i might be possible that they make a new engine but that's unlikely.

Check out the group, Planet Reach and talk about Bungie's next game without the annoyance of the public forum. Oh and it's nice there too.

You thought you had lag, it took Jesus 3 days to re-spawn.

I would go with, if not a new engine, a hugely modified version of the Halo 3 engine. Probably enough of a revision to be like new.

It'll probably be a new engine. They have built every game off a new engine, except Halo 3: ODST.

Bingo.

Have people forgotten the graphical leap from Halo 1, to Halo 2? It was absolutely phenomenal! They pushed the limits to the near end of the original Xbox. I'm sure they will improve just as much with this being their second game on the next gen console. And if not as much then at least enough change will occur, enough that is necessary for the time I believe.

So far, there have been 3 Halo engines... it's not like they're sticking to one engine, it's 3 totally different ones.

I think it's safe to say that Bungie is going all out with this game with a new engine, not like an expansion pack like ODST is (okay I know it's more jampacked than any expansion packed and it's a standalone game with more than enough playtime to keep me occupied but it's using the Halo 3 Engine so that's why I'm saying that).

WRONG. The halo engine has been all 3 halo games so far, and is a heavily modified version of the Havok engine. If halo were to keep the same core gameplay mechanics then they will do what they have done for all halo games; Upgrade the halo engine.

If you're right, and considering the leap in graphics from Halo:CE to Halo 2, the Halo engine would have needed a massive upgrade to produce that much of an increase in quality. So much of an upgrade that you could basically call it a "new" engine, in some sense.

No YOU are wrong. There are three separate halo engines. The first one was a modified Havok engine for Halo: CE, the second was a modified of the first for Halo 2, and the third was a brand new engine (for the 360) that was based on the Halo 2 engine. That last engine was/is being used for Halo 3 and Halo 3:ODST.

No dummy. Havok is the physics engine. Not the graphics engine. They started with the Halo engine. Then they moved to a new engine in Halo 2, but they found it didn't do some of the cool things the original Halo engine did so they added to it for the Halo 3 engine to make a sort of hybrid.

From what I've heard Bungie started with a new engine for Halo: CE, then Halo 2 used a completely new engine and Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST use an upgraded version of the Halo 2 engine.

However, this engine that Bungie are using for Halo 3: ODST and Halo 3 does look very dated now, and I think that even if they upgrade it, it won't be enough. So, I'm hoping for a brand new engine for a brand new Halo game. =)

The engine is not so bad seeing how it can do this:

Yummy

Just doesn't seem to fully take advantage of the 360's power seeing how we get marines like this:

Marines

Especially seeing how Uncharted 2 looks like this:

Uncharted 2

And everyone claims the 360 is better than the PS3.

Of course, the Unreal Engine 3.5 has:

High Density Crowds

Than again, High Density Crowds in the Unreal Engine 3.5 might as well be a giant particle system seeing how I'm not a game designer. So Halo 3's method of using actual individual characters may be better.

It's not. I think you'll all be surprised when you see what they changed.

I am flatterd that you botherd to look at my signature.

they probibly will just upgrade the halo engine...

i mean it works and the being able to be splatterd by street cones is awesome!

no other game lets you do that..

When I grow up, I want to be just like goofenhour.

My guess is that they will keep some parts of the game engine but heavily modify it.

I think that they will completely redo nearly the entire engine, but copying the Halo 3 game engine, but improving it at the same time. I personally think they will pretty much only do this for the physics and graphics. Keeping it the same but improving upon it.

Now for the AI engine, I think they will completely do this, to get a new feel on the enemies and make it look/feel completely different from the rest of the Halo games.

But to be truly honest, I wish they would redo the entire engine completely to give the game a different feeling from the rest of the Halo games.

Let's think about this really. You think that Halo 3 runs off an upgraded version of Halo 2? Not only are they on two different platforms of consoles, but they also are running it on a much higher resolution of Halo 2. The game engine is completely different with only small similarities

It does. Halo 2 does support 720p via the Emulator used for it on the 360 and when you own the rarely sold component cable for the original xbox both the original xbox's dashboard and halo 2 will be in 720p. Oh and both the 360 and the Xbox are just PC's with different software on it, so they aren't as different as you think they are.
And yes it is true halo 3 uses an modified version of the halo 2 engine, which is based on halo:CE's engine itself.

I've read many websites about this topic, and all of them say that Halo: Reach is going to be now using the Geo-Mod 2 engine, which was used in the newest Red Faction

Reach MMO. Here's to hoping.

And the people that believe "the hardcore playlists would be more popular if the rules were strictly MLG" can come off it, now. If you're not willing to support something close to your own setup, there's no reason for us to believe that cloning our own lists and stripping the variety down will attract more people. -- Shishka, Bungie.net

If it is not a new game engine then Bungie would be cheating. It cant truly be a "new" game if they don't contruct a better game engine. That's just my opinion.

Halo 3: ODST isn't a new game, then?
