Subject: Why people are angry about the pricing of ODST.

LW45 TS40 TO40 TSW35 TSN35 TT30 SB30 MLG25

IMPORTANT NOTICE: I am perfectly happy spending $60 on ODST. I will be preordering it full-price from Game in the hope of receiving it a day early. I believe it to be more than worth the price tag; I will likely play it a lot more than most games I buy for $60. In fact, if I had known I would play Halo 3 as much as I have, I would have happily forked over $600; I've certainly played it more than 10 times as much as any other 360 game I own.

Yet I understand why people are unhappy.

In September 2007, for $60, we were given a 10 hour campaign, a fantastic Matchmaking system, Forge, Theatre, and Customs. We were given 11 maps. We were given many solid additional features such as customisable armour and file sharing.

In September 2009, for $60, we will be given a 5 hour campaign, a new co-operative game mode, and 3 maps.

Hardly as good value for money. People see a short campaign and a map pack as worth perhaps $30, relative to Halo 3, that is. And what it seems to them is that the extra $30 is going towards disc 2; the disc that they have already bought.

But what about everybody who doesn't own Halo 3? I hear you say. Well, usually game pricing is based on development cost, not content. For instance:

Fallout 3 is larger content-wise than Mass Effect. But both cost a similar amount to develop due to Mass Effect's stronger graphics and more detailed environments, as well as the ambitious aim of animating every line of dialogue word for word.

To put that into further context, let's imagine a new game; Halo: Mythic. It costs $60, and comes with everything Halo 3 had to offer plus the Mythic Map Pack. According to the previous argument, the $60 price tag is justifiable. I think we all agree it isn't.

So, there you have the reason behind the anger of many people on these forums. I'm not suggesting that they are entirely valid, but it seems to me that many people don't fully understand their stance on the issue. I am here to explain.

Extra notes:

*Stop assigning figures to each feature of the game. Not only does it not work like that, but the figures are extremely subjective and not necessarily accurate for many people.

*Stop bundling the Reach beta, Recon, and Theatre into the content list of ODST. Not only is Recon a part of Halo 3, but most people wouldn't pay a penny for it. Theatre is also a part of Halo 3, and betas are always free extras; Crackdown being a prime example.

people are so upset by the price tag because the game is just an add-on to Halo 3 and add-ons have never been priced as full games (as far as i know anyway) due to their lack of content and Halo 3 ODST doesn't have multiplayer except for firefight and co-op so it should not be $60 (that's about £50 if you're british)

  • 06.10.2009 8:28 AM PDT

i got no problems with paying that either i was just stating why people are so angry

There should be a version with just the campaign, firefight, Halo Reach Beta, Johnson, and the 3 new mythic maps. Those features would be worth $40.

I have no problem with the pricing, I guess they're just mad because they think the the value on the game should be on what content your getting.

A 5 Hour campaign.
Firefight.
Theater.
3 new maps.
A multi-player beta to a new game, Halo Reach.

The point is relativity. You and I might be happy to buy the campaign, Firefight, and 3 maps for $60, but when you compare the cost of development and the content to other $60 games, you will find that it shouldn't be worth more than half that.

Problem is, by bundling in the rest of Halo 3, Microsoft can just about get away with selling it all for $60, which will dramatically increase the game's profit.

People heard it would be $40, not $60, even though $60 is appropriate.

WTF, I dont see why people complain...

YOU will get:

- A new Campaign
- Firefight
- 3 new multiplayer maps, ( you will also get legendary, mythic, heroic, cold storage if you havent buy them yet)
- Halo Reach Beta (OMG)
- Road to recon
- Pre order bonus

This is worth IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, it was confirmed to be $60.

Yeah, it was a nasty trick by Microsoft.
Put in all maps and Halo 3 Multiplayer to justify a high price.

They know most people who buy ODST will have Halo 3 and the Maps, so they catered the game for those that don't, so they can put on a pricey tag.

You would seriously have bought Halo 3 for $600?
You either have no sense of value or you are very rich.

- A new Campaign
- Firefight
- 3 new multiplayer maps, ( you will also get legendary, mythic, heroic, cold storage if you havent buy them yet)
- Halo Reach Beta (OMG)
- Road to recon
- Pre order bonus

A 5 hour Campaign, $15
Map pack, $10
Beta, $5. It does come out like 4 months before the full game...
A Virtual armour, $0
A bonus, $0

$30
I'd accept $40 as a fair price, since Firefight is also going to be in there.

Buuut
They added:
-All the maps, $20
-Halo Multiplayer, $20
-Result: Extremely good deal for those without Halo, rip off for the majority of people who do have Halo.

$60 is a fair price, but at the same time isn't, not for people who bought Halo 3.

Thomas

because its £50 for a 5 hour campaign, co-op, firefeight, theater and halo reach beta on the first disc and matchmaking, forge, custom games and theater on the second disc and plus you get all 24 halo 3 maps including the 11 that came with halo 3, heroic map pack, legendary map pack, cold storage and the 6 mythic maps that are worth 800ms(£5 a map pack) for each map pack so that will be £15, £25 ODST and second disc for £10 so it adds up to £50 so it's probably worth it in my mind.

i woke a bit ago and my son was playing halo 3 he was on forge i saw at the bottom of the screen was a charge for 35 dollars is that real or not did he charge 35 bucks or is that justfor the in game

-NO RECUITMENT MESSAGES PLEASE

I already have half of ODST's content. Virtually ALL of disk 2 is surplus to my requirements, yet I have to buy it anyway.

Do I feel ripped off and cheated? Yes.
Do I blame Bungie? No.
Do I blame Microsoft? Yes.
Will this stop me buying 2 copies of the game (one for me, one for my brother)? No.
Will it be awesome? Yes.
Will it be worth it? We'll see.

Also, a few of us were talking during matchmaking and Halo: Reach is definitely going to be, not a first person shooter, not a third person shooter, but a second person shooter. Bungie is going to revolutionize the way you watch other people play games.

Excellent synopsis of the problem at hand, OP. I think that it's pretty crappy that MS is forcing the longtime Halo 3 fans to, in essence, pay all over again for the map packs that they so eagerly downloaded the second they were released. If you don't own Halo 3 yet, here is the perfect time to buy it. I'm dismayed that they'd cater to the new fans rather than the diehards (like people on these forums) that made the Halo franchise the juggernaut that it is.

  • 06.10.2009 8:48 AM PDT

Flares the nubbies up.

Microsoft just made excuses off the content to make it worth $60.00.

GTA the Lost and Damned was only $20.00, if we were to add halo 3 maps to that pricing already, we'd get a good $35.00-$40.00!!!!

I'm still going to buy ODST, I'm just unhappy on how this world can be so freaking selfishly cold at times.

Let's do a little comparison between Halo 3 (when it shipped to keep things in perspective) and what we know about the ODST package as of yet:

Halo 3 Campaign: Linear, 10 hour campaign. Supports 4-player online co-op. Meta-game scoring. Skulls and other secrets.
ODST Campaign: Open world, 5-7 campaign. Supports 4-player online co-op. Meta-game scoring. Secrets UNKNOWN.

Halo 3 Multiplayer: 11 maps. Multiple game modes. Up to 16 players in a game. Party system.
ODST(Disc 2) Multiplayer: 24 maps. Multiple game modes. Up to 16 players in a game. Party system.

Halo 3 Forge: 11 maps to work with. Item placement. Online support.
ODST(Disc 2) Forge: 24 maps to work with (including Foundry and Sandbox). expanded item placement than Halo 3's Forge. Online support.

Halo 3 Theater: Saved Films and screenshots. Used for campaign, multiplayer, and Forge. Bungie.net integration.
ODST Theater: Saved Films and screenshots. Used for campaign, multiplayer, Firefight and Forge. Bungie.net integration.

Halo 3 Firefight: ?
ODST Firefight: Wave after wave of Covenant forces. 4-player online co-op. Skull integration.

Halo 3 Achievements: Potential 1000 gamerscore available to earn. Unlocks Armor Permutations for multiplayer.
ODST Achievements: Potential 1000 gamerscore available to earn PLUS up to 850 additional gamerscore from the Halo 3 multiplayer on Disc 2 (the original 100 gamerscore for multiplayer and the 750 gamerscore recently added on). Unlocks Recon Armor Permutation for multiplayer with Vidmaster Achievements.

So, what I'm saying here is ODST>Halo 3 (when available at launch September 2007). The $60 for ODST will go further than the $60+ you spent for Halo 3 two years ago.

$600 sounds like a lot for a game, but only because we are used to them being so much cheaper. I think most people are happy to spend $60 on a game that lasts them a couple of months, and Halo 3 has provided me with enjoyment for almost two years. In that sense, I reckon it's worth $600.

You have completely ignored the point I am making.

Yes, the content on Halo 3 ODST vastly surpasses that on Halo 3, yet around 50% of that content has already been purchased by the majority of fans.

Using your logic, I could justify the price tag on Halo: Mythic.

  • 06.10.2009 9:17 AM PDT

Why So Serious?

The game is going to be $60.00. Thats that.

  • 06.10.2009 9:19 AM PDT

Again, I am not arguing for a price decrease, nor are most who are disappointed with the price. But they have a right to voice their opinion, and I have a right to explain it.

The point that I was trying to articulate was that at their respective launches, ODST offers more to the player than Halo 3 did. Yes, people have already purchased 9 of the 24 maps ODST offers, but not everyone has. So far, I have only paid for one map pack at full price (Legendary, and it was worth it). Not everyone purchases the content Bungie and Microsoft put out on Marketplace. Some people don't even have XBL and can't purchase them even if they wanted to.

ODST offers the average person ALL the content Bungie has produced for Halo 3, a new campaign, and a new co-op experience. All for $60.

To be honest, I would have liked to see this campaign expansion cost between $40-50.

Do NOT send me Recruitment Letters, doing so will get you blocked faster than you can say "Huh?"

Lets break this down. It comes with twenty dollars worth of maps. It comes with a new campaign and new game mode, lets price that at 30. So that adds up to fifty, and hell lets throw in ten bucks for the Reach Beta. Thats 60.
