Subject: Why people are angry about the pricing of ODST.

People don't want to spend $60 on something that is pretty much an expansion, that and Bungie themselves stated that they would only charge like $40.

Most people don't like being shafted by M$ for no good reason.

  • 06.10.2009 9:35 AM PDT

The only thing that made me mad is that Bungie said it would not be $60.

Then greedy M$ comes out of nowhere and changes it to $60.

Halo 3 didn't give us a 10 hour campain.
I can beat it in like 6-7 hours.

Again, the value of the game for people who don't own Halo 3 or various map packs is irrelevant. ODST didn't cost nearly as much to develop as a full game, and just as Halo: Mythic shouldn't be priced at $60, despite having $60 worth of content, so ODST shouldn't be priced at $60 either.

Lets break this down. It comes with twenty dollars worth of maps. It comes with a new campaign and new game mode, lets price that at 30. So that adds up to fifty, and hell lets throw in ten bucks for the Reach Beta. Thats 60.

Every single point you made in this post is flawed. Please re-read the OP.

Equally, for some it takes 13-14 hours. I'm going by a first-time average here.

Or, if you can't be bothered with that, let me explain.

1. You cannot assign prices to individual game features.
2. If three maps are worth $10, then surely the maps alone should cost $80.
3. The Reach beta costs nothing; betas never do.

Heh, my fastest time on easy with three friends was an hour and 45 minutes.

But putting that aside, because we we're speed running, I think the amount paid for ODST is justified by the fact that we are all Halo fans.

I mean really, if what I hear is true about Bungie placing the price lower, Microsoft did what any company would do, make a business move and up the price, due to the large fanbase. People are going to buy it either way, and Bungie is going to get the blame for it, as with any large developer.

I think that this conversation should leave the forums permanently(Nothing against you, OP) and let's all focus on the good content within the game, since most of us will still be buying the game, despite the price.

I have no problem paying $130AUD to pre-order the limited edtion Shock Pack (the one with the controller). In fact, I think its a good deal. I agree, why are people angry with the price...

Besides, a 5-Hour Campaign, that depends on how you play it. If you play the Campaign linearly, then maybe, but the game is designed as a kind-of Sandbox game. So, if I wanted to, I could spend 35 hours roaming the streets of New Mombasa, p00ning br00ts, or bring mates with me for a co-op brute-poonfest, like Firefight's younger, less tough brother gametype. You can't really base a campaign time on a Sandbox game like GTA or , to a lesser extent, Assassin's Creed, because you can pace the campaign to go for however long you like.

Its two problems really.

First of all, the game was sold to everyone from the get-go as an Expansion. When the game was first conceived, I bet it was never conceived as a full $60 game. However, as development pushed forward, the game started growing. Firefight came online. It became much more than that. In fact, even with a slightly shorter campaign, Halo 3: ODST is probably worth more than the $60 we pay for all our other games, including Halo 3. However, the idea of it being an Expansion pack still lies in many peoples' heads and hence, you get an Internet Firestorm.

Secondly, many people feel that they are being forced to pay for all the DLC maps as well. Well, that is true in a sense but problem is, many people have already invested the money in the maps. Meaning that in the Halo 3 Multiplayer side of things, all they are getting is 3 new maps. Its understandable how people can get angry with this but the problem is no one here is seeing it from the business side of things.

The game is not only being sold to those who already have Halo 3 but also to those who have Halo 3, no LIVE connection but who still play Customs with friends. Also, Halo 3: ODST probably will be bought by a whole new generation of Halo players who have never touched a Halo game, or at least Halo 3. Hence, the game is priced as such. For those people, this game is a steal. But for those who have already bought everything, it can be seen as a bummer. Its a matter of understanding and letting go a bit. Again, these are tough economic times we are going through and its understandable.

Personally, I've bought all the maps for Halo 3 and have no problem forking up the $60 for this game regardless. I'm just happy for more Halo and being able to support Bungie and their future games is a bonus.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

i got no problems with paying that either i was just stating why people are so angry
I already bought the maps, so that is $20 that I already spent.

Pricing and what your given -

Disc One

ODST Campaign - 5-8 hours of campaign judging on what level you play, counting free-roam the campaign can be longer than Halo 3's campaign.

The Pricing - $25 = £15

Firefight Mode - Everlasting mode, which turns on skulls as you play through, random every time with different orders of enemies.

The Pricing - $20 = £12

Halo Reach Beta/Theatre - Accessible multi-player Beta, for a taste of Bungie's latest new product! And theatre just like Halo 3's one but for the new campaign and Firefight, take screenshots and videos!

The Pricing - FREE!

Disc one = $45 ( For pounds) £27

The pricing and what your given

Disc One

Multi-player - 24 maps, with the brand new 3 new maps Heretic ( Midship Remake), Citadel and Longshore.

The Pricing - $30 = £18

Disc Two = $35 ( In pounds) £21

But adding both discs together, they = $80( In pounds) =£48
Also actually get it for $60 and £30 = PROFIT!

BUT, seeing as many will be paying for disc two other again like me, ( deducting the 3 new maps) It would = $55 and £35 - Meaning its a loss of $5 and a profit of £5, but some British people for some reason bought it for £35 so they get it spot on!

So only thing to be sad about now is $5.

Ummm...I dont think the the angry fanboys put this much thought into it. Let's face it, the only reason people are complaining is because Bungie called it an expansion pack.

The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures which made the sensible economic decision that there's no good reason to go into space--each discovered, studied, and remembered by the ones who made the irrational decision.

Those who think the price is justified need to take an economics class, because you will be constantly ripped off over and over again in your life time. The truth is ODST has only a campaign half that of halo3 and firefight, most maps are just halo3, the online portion halo 3, all features such as theater are halo3. Loyal fans are being asked to burn $30 extra dollars basically on something they already own. Let me put this into perspective lets say you buy a new car, it costs you $20,000. You want an add on to your vehicle that will improve upon it which should be worth $10,000, however the dealership decides to bundle the ad-on with features you already have present in your car and up's the price to $20,000. You are being played but it is what it is, the fact that so many dont see a problem with this, expect more the same from Microsoft down the road since they are after all a business and they only care about a profit in the end. To me ODST is worth only $40. I have all the halo games and books, I am a loyal fan of the series, but I know when I am getting a bad bargain. I'll be renting ODST and waiting for the price to drop, no reason to pay for something I want bundled with something I already have and dont want.

(To all saying you cant put a price on different sections of a game: Youre right, but im going to do it anyway.)

Lets say im a hardcore Halo fan and ive downloaded all maps...
24 maps- 15$. i already have 21of said maps, So I wasted about 10$

Recon, and Reach beta- FREE!

Lets also say i pre-ordered; Johnson- also free
But i had to put a deposit on the game! lets say 10$

Sooo.. I wasted 20 bucks... Lets count upwards now.

Firefight- 15$

Campaign- 20$

Sheer badassery- 10$

So is it worth 25 bucks? im gladly going to spend 60$ on this, but still.

Do I feel ripped off- A bit
Do I blame Bungie- Nooo
Do I blame Micro-Blam!- -YES!
Do I blame Stosh- Yeah...

This better be one helluva game Bungie...

lol not £50 if ure british cause i am and it is £40 but i can get online for £37
You can get it for £35 in Argos, I think.

Anyway, at first, I wasn't happy about having to fork out that much on ODST, but Firefight mode made me feel "Actually, it might not be that bad." Now, after watching that new ViDoc, I can say that Campaign mode looks awesome too! I'm not worried about paying £35-40 for it anymore.

Why is everyone saying that the campaign is 5 hours long? It was five hours long when the game was $30-$40!

The only thing that has changed is the inclusion of the second disc with all halo map packs etc. Thats what drove the price up.

Duracell.
I don't keep going and going and going and...
but i Start, and just don't Stop.

So what if the saxophone is black?
it has better tone the the gold one.
damn straight i play Jazz.

just an FYI it isn't a 5 hour campaign any more. as they said 1 hour per mission and about half an hour between each mission to reach the different way points(Joe Staten said this in the play through of the first mission, it's why he used that teleport 'cheat')

Now lets do some fairly simple math.

-There are 6 missions if the leaked achievements are to be believed.
-That means 6 one hour missions.
-6 x 1 = 6
-That means there is 6 hours in missions alone. Lets store that number away in our head and -move to the next part of our game length calculations.

-if there are 6 missions that means you need to travel to all 6, Correct? that means there are 6 times you need to travel to a new location, (travel to point one, travel to point 2, travel to point 3, travel, to point 4, travel to point 5, and travel to point 6. That's Six travel times)
-now we were told in the mission walk through by Jo Staten that it's about half an hour to walk to a target point when he used his teleport cheat.
-6Travel times of half an hour each
-6 x 0.5 = 3
-this means that that there is about 3 hours of just running to your objectives alone.
-now to move to the final part of our calculations here

-taking that first number we got from the beginning of ODST's development and the leaked achievements and adding them to the travel time result we get:
-6 hours of missions plus the 3 hours of travel time
-6 + 3 = 9
-This means there is about 9 hours of campaign.

This number of 9 hours of campaign is the equivalent of an average FULL game these days.
