I didn't know about this and I haven't seen it here before, so please don't flame me just because you knew about it. Forums are generally for asking questions and discussing things.
Anyway, I was playing the second level, Halo, just for fun again and I decided to see what would happen if I skip the part where you save the first batch of marines and afterwards you get a warthog. So I walked (I didn't have the warthog, since you get that AFTER saving the marines) down to the "man-made" tunnel and continued inside. Then came the gap in tunnel where you have to jump over with the warthog. I guess this was supposed to prevent you from what I was doing. However, I grenade-jumped the gap and continued on. I ended up at the first of three squads of marines. Even though my objective was still to save the original marines, Foehammer still picked these ones up after I killed all the Covenant. After that, it for some reason dropped off a warthog, and I saved the other two batches of marines. Then it told me to get in the dropship. So I could have finished the level without doing anything about the first bunch of marines. Just for the heck of it I went back to the very first part, to see what had happened there, expecting a mass of Covenant. Only that halfway through the tunnel, the screen went blue, and I could hear myself getting in a dropship and lifting off. Cortana was even talking to Foehammer. Anyone else had this?
