Subject: Halo Reach is a possible tactical shooter.

I was listening to the Official Xbox Magazine pod cast and some interesting info about Reach came up. According to the pod cast guys Bungie hired a guy by the name of Christian Allen to be a lead designer for Reach. Allen's previous works have been on the Ghost Recon series all being tactical shooter. So my guess Reach is going to be squad based and their are five people in the banner for Reach. The Pod Cast is number 167 and they start talking about it at about the 42.00 mark.

Just because Bungie hired someone who was known for making tactical shooters doesn't mean Halo: Reach will be one. EA hired Steven Spielberg to make a game, but whilst his movies were pulse pounding blockbusters his game was an easy going and family friendly game. Maybe the guy left the Ghost Recon team so he could work on something different?

You could be right but it seems odd they hire a guy who's whole background is the tactical shooter genera why wouldn't they use their own vet game designers and the fact the Reach banner has 5 different people, holding different weapons makes me think squad shooter.

It is interesting to think about and is definitely something that they could do. I hope, however, that they keep the main Halo series as the same type of FPS that it has always been and make a tactical shooter that is part of a different series.

Good point, but it could also be refering to the fact that you might be playing from 5 different perspectives, ala Halo 3 ODST?

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

I would prefer changing POV's as long as it is handled well. The engagements on and around Reach were very different for the different groups involved, i'd like to have different feels brought to the game to show that each Spartan is not MC, that each are individually talented and each are individually important.

I don't think that this will be a squad shooter, not since it was announced as an FPS. The inclusion of a former GR game could mean tactical shooter, but I wouldn't bet money on anything at this point.

Being able to play from different characters POV would be a lot of fun I think. It would make the game interesting and I hope they do something like that, but I would prefer not having a tactical shooter in this case.

yeah, but bungie, the guys who actually make halo have said its a FPS, not like ghost recon ( which was a terrible game by the way)

I'm trying to understand why this can't it be a FPS and still be tactical shooter. I mean you can put commands on the DPad and use the Hud system to move your squad of spartans and have them attack and take cover and defend etc for the commands on the Dpad

Down- Movement of troops
Left- Engage Enemy
Right- Take cover/defend
Up- Switch from team command to individual, and cycle through your squad to give individual commands.

I mean it could add a new element and gives a chance to direct a full team of Spartans but it also allows them some freedom with AI and let them do their own thing

My opinion on that specific point is that to be able to command other Spartans and keep the game enjoyable you would have to keep their abilities subdued, and that just sucks. It would be far to easy to get through tough spots as telling a group of Spartans to attack a location means that everything in that spot is about to get fffff'd up pretty bad. I'm sure there are other implements, but simple conventions would water things down IMO.

The battle of Reach was a huge defeat for UNSC, they were outnumbered and outgunned and didn't stand a chance.

I agree if you command a squad of Spartans during skirmishes that the enemy will be fd up but say if it was a whole regiment (100+) covenant coming down on you. The other thing they can do is so it doesn't get tiresome of bringing up your troops you can have some missions where your able to control your squad and some where they are on their own like yourself following your lead but they will do their own thing

Granted I'm not in favor or against this and think in moderation this feature could be pretty cool to the gameplay of Halo. Do I think they will do this, probably not, but I don't understand why people say it's a FPS so cannot be a a tactical shooter
