as the events unfold.

in halo 2 the covenant fleet under the command of the Prophet of Regret arrives at earth seeking the ark. they are stunned to find billions of humans LIVING there, and are soon under fire.

the first battle of earth takes place with the humans kicking the crap out of the covenant forces. as the Prophet of regret decides to make the jump to Delta Halo from above new mombasa he pulls all of his forces back, this battle group is led by the ELITES.

almost immediately following Regret's retreat, The Prophet of Truth brings his Fleet led by the Brutes(truth's favored troops) to earth and attacks again, this time they stay to uncover the ark. these Brute led covenant forces are now patrolling new mombasa.

EVENTS OF ODST HAPPEN HERE

The Prophet of regret arrives at delta halo with the chief close behind.

Truth finds out that the humans were waiting for him because Regret had failed. to punish regret for his failure he personally goes to delta halo leaving his forces at earth, taking Tartarus with him to kill Regret. The Prophet of Mercy also moves to delta halo with his fleet and high Charity.

Truth then takes the death of Regret and uses the fact that the Chief was there to blame the elites for the death of regret, and throws them from power, to place his men (the brutes) in the leader caste of the covenant.

As you can see, even though the humans and the elites are not allied at the time of ODST, there are NO ELITES on earth at the time, as they like the Chief are all at delta halo, only brute led forces were left to fight at earth after the slipspace event

Go Rams and Missouri!

No, it's just because it was the first step in the eradication of Elites in all major roles in the Covenant army.

  • 06.10.2009 4:49 PM PDT

MM

I can't believe that people can't figure this out for themselves, and then get angry about it. Not all knowledge needs to be spoonfed, people!

But yes, good thread, put the whiners to rest.

Your friendly and eccentric Sangheili forum-poster. :)

Bungie already stated this, back in January I believe.

"You will be spared a public display of our contempt only thanks to mercy and his wise council"
-Cortana, Halo 2 (underwater elevator segment)

You should probably pay better attention when Cortana is telling you things because she's usually spouting out something expositive that might let you know what exactly is going on at the moment, like Truth explicitly saying that he's not going to kill Regret.

rather he was not going to kill regret publicly, this anouncement let him blame the incident on the chief, even though the chief did kill regret the prophet of truth didn't know that, he belived that when he fired on the island where regret was that that shot killed Regret, and all the elites inside the building

The War is over... The Rain is falling...

That wouldn't make sense, then why would Truth dispatch multiple phantoms to the temple if he was going to destroy it?

From what I've been able to determine is that the Prophets usually have the Elites guard them, not the Brutes. So when Regret fled, he left Brutes to secure the area, and Elites to continue guarding him.

Only plausible conclusion. But still, I hope there's some degree of clarification from Bungie on the transition from Elites to Brutes.

are we refering to the phantoms that attacked you as you moved in on the temple? those were Regrets men, and if we are refering to the ships that were there when the chief jumped into the water as the temple was hit, then those were the ships that fired on the temple.

Regret favored the elites, and mercy used them as his guard as they were the leader class of the covenant, yet Truth kept the brutes as his personal guard, the brutes in new mombasa were never left behind by regret but rather brought by Truth

No, as soon as High Charity came in to sight, Cortana mentioned that there were too many covenant phantoms for her to calculate.

Truth was never at Earth though at that time. So there must be even more of a Covenant hierarchy then that extends into the military.

Regret was guarded by Elites, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that he still had Brutes to command. Prophets have every member of the Covenant at their disposal.

true however bungie said that the brutes that are on earth were truth's fleet, regret apparently had the same dislike for the brutes that Truth had for the elites

i believe she said cruisers, and no matter what she said this was the force that was sent to kill regret.

just checked, she definatly said cruisers

look at 4:57 - 5:02 ... and when the prophet dies the phantoms turn around... and it still wouldnt make sense y they would send phantoms to the temple even though they were gonna blow it up...

check your sources...
