Yeah, the first reply-er missed your point. I understand what you're talking about, but I don't understand your question at all.
And yes, Gears' story definitely took place over more than 6 hours.Say you find your first "clue" (assuming that one with Dutch isn't the very first one you have to find). You go back to what happens right after the drop. Either:
-you and your squad are trapped aimlessly in Covenant country, everyone is confused and fighting, and you are looking for where DARE dropped or waiting for word from your UNSC superiors. You wait until the EMP effects loosen up on all the ground forces.
or
-you and your buddies make it straight to the ONI building, no cool fighting, no transport, YOU ARE ALREADY THERE.
Or course I don't how non-linear this game is. Perhaps Bungie will drop all the flashbacks in different places, and we will have to pieces together the story by ourselves if we don't listen to the SI and find the "right" one first. I also don't know if the whole game will be told in flashback form or after 2/3 of the game the UNSC intends to come back to New Mombassa (or you find your fellow ODST's) and the game will end in "the present" (or 6 hours after the drop).
I'm just sure most, if not all, the ODST's are off course and confused, regardless of where DARE puts them at the last second.
And I'm, not entirely sure of the damage radius of the slipspace rupture: in Halo 2 we saw it taking in buildings but blowing back trucks and cars. I just know it takes out various forms of communication.
