This theory of mine kind of takes Eagle117's HUGE post a little further. (If you haven't read it, you should.) It is my belief that the Covenant and humans met long before the events in the book Fall of Reach. In the book one of the ONI guys said that by our translation they call themselves the Covenant. How could they have translated that if they had never met the Covenant before? They would have no records or anything to compare to. Since they were able to "translate" some of the Covenant's language, is it not only probable, but concievable that the humans had met the Covenant before? Eagle117's post explained the possibility of a flash clone of John - 117 going under Akerson's orders to explore Halo. I think that it is possible that that region of space was occupied by the Covenant, possibly even a sacred place to them. I think that the flash clone contacted the Covenant and may have even recorded the whole meeting. He may have then sent that info to ONI where they began to translate the new language. If that is the case, then the Covenant may have felt offended somehow, or provoked. And that is when they begin their holy way against humanity. There is a good posibility that I am completely wrong, but I just thought I'd throw this out there for people to ponder.
