It seems that Bungie is a better bible school teacher than those nuns.

Well, yes, but you could really get anything if you look hard enough. Proof of that: Christianity is still a dominant religion, but I don't want to get into that much.

i can has cheez its?

Well, as the hero, it's easy to compare the Master Chief to a messiah.
Halo is rife with biblical references.

  • 06.10.2009 9:00 PM PDT

god created guns for a reason

fairly intersesting theory on the whole mastercheif/jesus thing. It wouldnt suprise me if bungie script writers aluded to him on purpouse. Sadly this thread will most likely erupt into a flame war.

I've posted this stuff years ago, never had a thread locked. Only got a few people blacklisted.
I and my threads stayed pretty clean.

And yes, Bungie did write a lot of it on purpose.
Check it.
ciber How did you get the idea for Halo?
Chris Butcher [...] as far as the story, it can be looked at as a biblical allegory. the parallels are stronger than you probably realise, because nobody outside of bungie has more than a corner of the big picture. and we only have two corners.

Panzerscarab, is it really creepy? Or is it that you just don't like it?

I like this. I'm not a Christian but I agree; just because he's pointing this out doesn't make it "creepy".

Bare with me here, I mean thematically.
Jesus as a Man or an idea or a theme has been prevalent all through out the Halo stories, both in the games and in books.
The Master Chief fulfills a ship-load of Jesus euphemisms. The Arbiter, Johnson and the Prophets also. I won't immediately describe how they do, unless specifically asked. No one person is assigned to His likeness, but He is prevalent none-the-less throughout.

I suppose I can elaborate on the Chief before specifically talking about the ODST reference, just so I don't go way too ahead of myself...

A while a back (try a few years) I posted a thread about how the Chief is thematically like Jesus Christ.

His time on Earth was short, making one of His first stops in Egypt/[Cairo!]
He left suddenly, descended to the Grave and in doing so destroyed Regret.
Following the voice of Truth, He walked the streets of the Covenant Holy City.
At His second coming to Earth He defeated the Grave and the last False Prophet and Saved mankind.

If you want me to discuss how the other characters or events or ideas foot the Holy bill, ask and I'll elaborated. But on to the ODST aspect. Don't blink, it's real quick.

According to the Apostle's Creed:
Jesus Christ [...] was as crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into Hell.

I think it's so cool that Bungie came up with the idea for ODST's, especially since they put so much effort into creating Scripturally based allegorical themes and characters.

Some Christian sects believe that in order for Christ to fulfill the sin-penalty on our behalf, He'd not only have to die for our sins, but go to Hell (temporarily) for them. Not all Christians believe this, but a lot do, hence the Creed.

"Feet first in to Hell"
"We are dropping into Hell, troopers!"
"He descended into Hell."

Your an idiot, find better things to do than talk trash about the Lord.

No need to hate on the religious among us.I do find the religious-esque qualities in the Halo series very interesting, and a bit necessary for a story of the magnitude on which Bungie founded it on.Even the names:The Flood,The Covenant,Halo. What about a lot of the lines?
"I am your shield,I am your sword." None of this means Bungie is overtly religious in any way shape or form, just that they know how to build a great story.

Back.. and to the left.
Back.. and to the left.

Thats pretty awesome, but if you try hard enough you can compare just about anything to religion.

Sleezykelveezy, you might want to take your words back before punitive action is taken.
I am not talking trash about Jesus. I am quoting the Apostle's Creed as well as the trailers.

Oh, and yes! Havok! Wonderful!
The shield/sword quote references God in the book of Deuteronomy... let me find the passage.
Deuteronomy 33:29

The Bible isn't the only big influence on the Halo story, but it is a really big'n'.

Take a look at this idea this way:

Every story has an archetype, and/or a theme. If you drop the religious viewpoint, Iceweasal is making an interesting comparison, along the lines of comparing King Arthur's tale with Star Wars, and the like~.

God of War was an awsome take on ancient myths. I enjoyed seeing the gods of Olympus appearing in a darker tone, with a spin on their appearances.

And as for your theory on "great stories" I agree completely. Look at the Halo franchise. :D

That's true. That's very true. I am notorious for doing that.
Say, do kids still know about the Seventh column around here?

You're right. Have you read Joseph Campbel's book, The Hero with a thousand Faces? It's a socio-psychological book which takes a look at major religions, old myths and common stories, and builds from all of them the "Monomyth". Star Wars admittedly used Campbel's book as a reference point for the construction of that particular story franchise. The story of Jesus makes it in there, too.

A common element among many old stories is the hero descending into the grave and/or ascending to the place of gods, and then returning from both unharmed and/or else mythically changed.

of course they are! nuns don't let you shoot people.

and i think the parallels are certainly viable, but to me the Forerunners seem more like God then Chief.

( Its easy to imagine the forerunners saying this to early humans "Now behold, I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and with your descendants after you; and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth. God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations; I set My {rain}bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. "It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.) Genesis 9: 9-15

this also brings up the popular "rainbow theory" (seven colors in a rainbow, seven halos, each ring being color coded; 004 is blue/indigo, 005 being red )

just interesting tidbit

but yeah, halo is full of religious symbols and stuff. master chief (spartan 117)? try Revalation 1:17.

Bungie, oh Bungie, oh Bungie,
Know what would really be fun, G?
I don’t wish to nag
But remake Coag,
Or die from a purple sword-lungie.

Heracles was born before Jesus, so Heracles is the original ODST.

I find that quite offensive to my religion, and I'd respect it you'd keep your beliefs to yourself. This thread isn't about your take on Jesus, it's how Bungie is incorporating Biblical themes.

First of all, he's not saying a thing to insult God. Secondly, I think this is a very good topic. Not many serious threads are on these forums any more and most of them just get discarded, but this theory seems correct, interesting and true as far as I can see.

btw its 2000 years.

however i agree on some things.
i'm no bible -blam!- and hell went to church once in my life.

religion is something that the overzealous like to brag about.

over 2000 years (for the most recent books up to 5000 for the older ones), several hundred translations and retranslations, thinks are bound to get screwed up.
