Heracles was born before Jesus, so Heracles is the original ODST.
=P

but jesus doesn't have a crappy disney movie about him, nor did he murder his wife and children due to the fact he had neither.

and Gilgamesh (the first Hero) was before Hercules so technically hes the first

Thats pretty awesome, but if you try hard enough you can compare just about anything to religion.

That's true. That's very true. I am notorious for doing that.
Say, do kids still know about the Seventh column around here?

Yeah i know about the seventh column and i wasnt denying religous connection. i just think this idea is pretty funny.

I find that quite offensive to my religion, and I'd respect it you'd keep your beliefs to yourself. This thread isn't about your take on Jesus, it's how Bungie is incorporating Biblical themes.

He was saying his opinion. Much like you people are allowed to say your opinion by going door to door saying I'm going to he'll if I don't convert now. Don't get pissed when people insult your religion because you types of people do it all the time and I just have to accept it. I hate how Christianity is the untouchable force in society.

I can't recall Gilgamesh ever going into hell. Then again, I didn't pay attention in class while we read that story. lol

I don't go door to door, just for the record. My religion is a huge factor in my life, and keep my opinions to myself, and I respect others. If had said "I disagree..." or something, it would have been okay, discussion over. I don't know about you, but I care about my faith and beliefs, and I'm willing to stand up for them when others feel like mocking them.

I've noticed that Halo has a lot of things doing with the Bible.

I don't know if you can take anything from that and compare it to Halo, I just had saw it one day and remember MCs name is John and he is spartan 117.

I looked up John 1:17, and got another verse. That made a slight bit of sense, at first. But I couldn't really make sense of it. (in relation to the Halo Universe, mind you)

Quoting Revelations 1:17 (written by John the Revelator) makes the most sense to me.
"Behold, I am the first and the last..."

The idea of "first and last" applies very much to John (Master Chief) if you read Fall of Reach.
On the obstacle course he was very first but his team was very last.
Later when he escorted the other spartans in training to the dropship during an exercise, he was the first one on and the last one off, just to name a couple.

The Arbiter bares a similar motif with the Alpha-Omega concept.
If you read the Art of Halo 3 book, it details the fact that the Arbiter armor is the first armor, and all elite armors come from it, and not the other way around.

So this shell, this Arbiter prison-armor was worn by the first and the last.
It helped form the covenant, and it helped destroy the Covenant.
(It also helps that the Arbiter's punishment in Halo 2 was a visual form of crucifixion)

Just because something takes inspiration from something doesnt mean its revolves around it. Yes Bungie added some biblical aspects to the halo story line, but there were other inspirations for the halo story. For example there are characters and lines practically copy and pasted out of Aliens, samurai flags on the brute's backs in halo 2, and super soldiers called spartans. Does that mean halo is based off of Aliens, samurais, or a greek city state? Nobody can create a completely original story nowadays that's why inspiration is taken from many things like movies, history, and yes even the bible.

Most likely is that there is no signifigant relation between the bible and halo.

Bare with me here, I mean thematically.
Jesus as a Man or an idea or a theme has been prevalent all through out the Halo stories, both in the games and in books.
The Master Chief fulfills a ship-load of Jesus euphemisms. The Arbiter, Johnson and the Prophets also. I won't immediately describe how they do, unless specifically asked. No one person is assigned to His likeness, but He is prevalent none-the-less throughout.

I suppose I can elaborate on the Chief before specifically talking about the ODST reference, just so I don't go way too ahead of myself...

A while a back (try a few years) I posted a thread about how the Chief is thematically like Jesus Christ.

His time on Earth was short, making one of His first stops in Egypt/[Cairo!]
He left suddenly, descended to the Grave and in doing so destroyed Regret.
Following the voice of Truth, He walked the streets of the Covenant Holy City.
At His second coming to Earth He defeated the Grave and the last False Prophet and Saved mankind.

If you want me to discuss how the other characters or events or ideas foot the Holy bill, ask and I'll elaborated. But on to the ODST aspect. Don't blink, it's real quick.

According to the Apostle's Creed:
Jesus Christ [...] was as crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into Hell.

I think it's so cool that Bungie came up with the idea for ODST's, especially since they put so much effort into creating Scripturally based allegorical themes and characters.

Some Christian sects believe that in order for Christ to fulfill the sin-penalty on our behalf, He'd not only have to die for our sins, but go to Hell (temporarily) for them. Not all Christians believe this, but a lot do, hence the Creed.

"Feet first in to Hell"
"We are dropping into Hell, troopers!"
"He descended into Hell."

Your an idiot, find better things to do than talk trash about the Lord.

Dude, I'm a Christian and I do not find this offensive. He is stating similarities between the HALO series and the Bible. Bungie said they based some the HALO story off of Bible stories

Did I once say that the Bible was the only source for the stories?
No, in fact I did say many are involved.
But bungie employees have not only mentioned things like the samurai flags (and such) but specifically, from their mouths (or typing) the scriptural base.
Take it from Chris Butcher, the biblical allegories are deeper than you probably realize. He even admits a lot of the bungie staff only has "two corners of the puzzle".

You are right to say it has many influences, but I hope you are not trying to actually discredit what I am posting by saying there are multiple influences. You are only reinforcing my point.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:

Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell. [See Calvin]

The third day He arose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Great analogy. I don't know if this was intended by Bungie but if not then its a fairly genius connection.

Don't forget the people, eagerly awaiting and hoping for the Cheif's return. Much like a certain someone who will supposedly rise again to cleanse the world of evil and save the land.

Lots of holy babble, but hey it's fun.

Nice analogy. I dislike these topics as you make it sound as though it were intentionally inferred to be linked to various kinds of religion, mythos and legend, rather than a cute tie-in that simply adds depth to the story.

But, I do see the connection, and I appreciate it all the same.
