The last time I tried to make a quote, a car smashed through my wall and the tire hit my grandmother in the other room. But for those of you who can haz once more between five, I say it will be five between seven divided by zero multiplied by Chick Norass and Broce Tee.

Why is it that Bungie decided to give the Rookie superhuman punches that are able to hurt brutes?

This IS campaign, and in previous campaigns marines could NOT hurt a brute. (Think cutscene before the end of Sierra 117 where Sgt. Johnson is trapped and tries to punch the brutes guarding him.)

Only a Spartan would be able to realistically hurt the covenant with their bare hands.

Is this purely for gameplay reasons?

Because Johnson didn't do a knuckle punch to the THROAT like he should have done.
1 hit wonder.

Though it would be totally unrealistic, weakening the melee would break gameplay. The melee is one of the three main aspects of Halo weapons (melee, grenades, and guns). Weakening the melee would discourage the use of on of the aspects, therefore significantly changing gameplay.

You're right but I am going to tell you why it's better that he stay that way.

In a one on one fight with no weapons or anything but their fists, 9.99 times out of 10 the Brute will win. It'd be like fighting a rhino mixed with a gorilla but only with the intelligence of a human. So basically it'd be really hard to kill.

With guns, the fighting is a little more fair. In close quarters the Brute still has the upper hand but the ODST has a lifetime of training against the Brute who probably just joined because everyone else did. In long distance fights, the Brute doesn't really stand a chance over the ODST.

If you have read the books, ODST's are one step lower than Spartans but one step higher than Marines. They are body builders, and highly trained special ops soldiers of the UNSC.

Also, in Halo 3 Sergeant Johnson punched the chest plate of a Brute Chieftain, not the bear skin of a normal Brute. The Chieftains, as metioned before, are stronger than normal Brutes and probably have much better armour.

So what is my point? A Marine might be able to land a punch and do some damage while and ODST will be able to land a punch and do some damage... just not nearly as much as a Spartan. Some of the strength of the ODST also comes from gameplay. No one wants to play a game where they stand no chance against their enemies. Losing wouldn't even be frustrating it would be boring because it happens so often. I personally like where the melee strength in this game is.

A way to make it seem a bit more like a normal human would be to use a knife.

It still has the same speed and strength as it is the person who is swinging it, but yes more damage.

Sgt. Johnson is a Spartan - I
No, he's not. You have no proof. It's not been confirmed or stated in any book.

My third montage!

I once saw three ODST's swarm a brute in halo 3's campaign. I don't remember what difficulty I was playing on but it was impressive.

Can't be too careful with your company. I can feel the devil walking next to me.

If you're going to hit the brute with the end of your gun, your going to do it with great force. In Sierra 117, Johnson punches the Brute Chieftain. The Chieftains all took longer to kill than regular Brutes, so Johnson's attack was futile. You are a, probably stronger than Johnson, ODST against a regular Brute. Need I explain more?

They're not going to remove melees to make it "realistic". The games have never held completely true to the novels anyway.

It's a game. Complaining that something doesn't seem real in it is obvious. Do we see giant apes walking aroud the city with armor on?

Too bad we didn't have a combat knife that we could take out (hold Y to take out knife?). If we had the knife equipped we could melee brutes like usual, but if not then your melees wouldn't do any damage to brutes or hunters. You could hold Y again to put the knife away.

Good or bad idea?

Bad idea. It'd be even more comparable to Cod 4.
