Subject: Revive System in Halo: Reach - Updated 8/10/09

A revive option would be pretty bad ass for reach. Like you get shot and you fall, and a teammate can revive you to get back up.. but at the same time its an easy double kill for the other team because you got one man down and another helping him. This would be a cool addition to reach multiplayer I havent seen yet. They could work out the system on how you revived them.. doesnt have to be like in other games. It could have its own Halo feel to it.

Just an idea.. and I know this isnt CoD or whatever the fanboys are going to say. Its just an idea.. and like I said.. the developers could come up with their own way to make it their own. And not like other games..

- Could be cool in campaign when you are fighting with other marines.. it would make you work as a team. You could revive them and vice-versa..

-- Update --

No one can object to a revival system in campaign. It makes perfect sense. You go at your own pace in campaign and you would definitely want to help your comrades in missions. Hell, even certain missions could require that you keep your squad alive throughout the length of the campaign level. It would certainly up the difficulty level a notch.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NJ Peilli88's approach:

Personally I don't see this working; at least not in multiplayer. However, I am a fan of the reintroduction of the Halo CE health system, i.e. health pickups.

If they were to include a revival system, and have something along the lines of the Halo CE health system, maybe when you'd revive a teammate, you'd have to give them one of your own little health boxes.

In this case you'd be sacrificing some of your own health for your teammate, and if you're really low on health, you'd have to think twice.

Also, when the player is revived, they'd only have their shield and one health box. Thus, they'd still be very low on health. This would provide them with the immediate need to both seek cover, make wise combat decisions, and search for more health.

They could even further innovate on this idea. For example, as someone mentioned some pages earlier, one should not be revived if they are killed with a headshot. As well, they cannot be revived if they are killed by an explosion, or anything else that can and should be considered a one-hit kill.

As well, the person should NOT be allowed to defend themselves when downed as they are able to in games such as Call of Duty or Left 4 Dead, but should be allowed to tilt their view so to allow their teammates some reference of where they were downed. Also the person should be able to be "officially" killed by an enemy by a firm headshot or explosive.

Furthermore, obviously they should be timed for how long they are allowed to be down until they automatically respawn. They also have the option to press a button to automatically respawn instead of waiting for a revive. This will be seen as more fitting because after 10 seconds of waiting a revive, half the additional time waiting will be added to their next respawn time.

*Example: Longest time to wait for revive is 30 seconds
Player waits full time and is not revived...
player must wait for respawn for 15 seconds.

*Example 2: Player waited 20 seconds, then chose to respawn
Player then must wait 10 seconds for respawn

This can add a layer of penalty for the players that hadn't been implemented before. In earlier Halo games, respawn times were always 3-5 seconds long, so most players, if they choose to wait for a revive won't wait any longer than 10 seconds anyhow.

As well, a player should only be allowed to be revived once. The second time the player is killed, they're killed.

The animation will be simple, quick, yet still fluid. It would be something along the lines of a player grabbing another player by the back or the collar and "lifting them back to life". For a moment the revived player will have the glowing aura of invulnerability players would get when respawning, and then they are officially put back in the game.

The mechanics can be worked out well by Bungie that it can add some great layers to the game. None of it would really slow the pace down. What this feature would add can consist of more scrambling, desperate battles for final kills, along with games such as VIP becoming far more intense and growing to become more popular than ever before.

Being able to revive in ways such as this would not necessarily give unfair advantages to anyone and would not be considered a nuisance to other participating players for several reasons.

1. Downed players cannot shoot
2. Downed players are penalized with time when waiting for revival
3. Downed players, when revived are given only a small fragment of health
4. No Reviving Frenzies - 1 revival per life, and reviving reduces life

Closing Comments...
At first, I thought this was a really bad idea, but now that I was able to brainstorm and come up with my own thoughts and theories, a little work like the features I outlined in my comment can actually let reviving be a cool new layer to the Halo franchise. Considering the fall of Reach consisted of several squads and military units, you'd expect team tactics to be at full force. Technically a revival system kind of makes sense.

How about a CPR revival system? Triggers to breath into mouth, click left and right stick in at the same time to get the oxygen flowing. Good, no?

Kinda like Caste Crashers. Pull R at the right time to revive them.

And let's make it so you can take cover behind conveniently placed, low walls.

And then we change the Chiefs first name to Marcus.

And the rename the series "Halos of War" or "Gears of Halo".

Sorry dude but revival systems just don't belong in Halo.

I was wondering how long it would be before one of "your type" showed up.. and I suppose if this was a "Wish List" idea for Halo 3 and it hadnt come out yet.. and I said I would like to see equipment incorporated into the game you would say something idiotic like "Yeah and lets call it Halo: 007.. sorry dude but equipment doesnt belong in Halo." ? Something along those lines? Thats why you will never get a job that requires you to be creative, or even think outside the box just a little... or for that matter, think in general.

Can we crawl when injured or blow ourselves up with grenades?

Lets rename the series Gears of Halo, just to be fair we'll Give chief a goatee and name him Marcus...

  • 06.11.2009 5:08 PM PDT

Haha that was pretty funny..

But back on topic... It doesnt have to be a revive system.. but some variant where you can drop off supplies or call an AI to come get your health back up.

That'd be great, although I'd use them to shock my enemies instead.

Ah, that's more like it. I wouldn't want a revive system, but that sounds like a good idea, especially because it's realistic.

Why is everyone above me being so negative? It's a great idea, and with the Bungie magic, could work quite well. Maybe not in multiplayer, but in sinle-player, yes.

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

That would be great, but only if it was a bit of a rare occurrence, if it happened all the time it would be annoying etc...

I think that when you are on the ground you should still be able to shoot but not turn all the way around, and of course have a very very low health.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

It's a bad idea actually. It would slow the games pace down dramatically.
