I dont think that large maps work well with Halo 2/3 gameplay. The vehicles are too dominant (not due to the driver/gunners skill necessarily, but the enemies' inability to damage them without specific weapons) and the weapons are too close-range oriented and random.
I understand that some people really like large maps, but fact is, I don't think Halo 3 works particularly well on big maps either. I think there is a lack of options when you want to take out vehicles and that leads to two things: only one person will generally own vehicles (the one who got the Laser the fastest), whereas people without it will be encouraged to just give up (leading to team killing, quitting and all sorts of bad player behavior).
Yes, you can take vehicles out in a variety of ways, but a couple are way more efficient than others (Laser, Rockets at close range), while others require a lot more skill/luck (stickies, plasma pistol, even power drain to some extent - I see more people using power drains badly rather than well) and yet others even more luck/skill (sniping drivers/gunners, frag grenades to turn the hog over a cliff, for instance). All this assuming driver and gunner(s) know what they're doing, of course.
The H3 sandbox really is geared towards close-mid range as the sweet spot for H3 combat.
