(Sigh)
I love people. Really.
So one guy suggested that it be called Halo 2: ODST because of the timeline.
Another person suggested that it be called Halo: ODST because it hearkens back to Halo 1.
(Why did I start using the word "hearken"? Does that even mean anything?)
The reason it's called Halo 3: ODST is because...
1: Uses Halo 3's engine.
2: Includes complete version of Halo 3's multiplayer
3: Is an expansion for Halo 3.
This basically what I was going to post.
See, you have to realize that Halo 3: ODST was not intended to hold nearly as much content as a full game. Bungie just wanted to make use of the Halo 3 engine to do a short story that fans would appreciate.
Let me define "same engine" in english - This game will have the same physics, weapons, enemies (and when I say enemies, I don't mean, "this game has brutes too", I mean, "this game has the same exact brute model and animations as halo 3"), vehicles, explosions, etc, because they didn't build it from scratch. They [i]hardly[/] built it from scratch.
In the beginning, I assumed it was going to be a new character to play as, a few reskinned and tweaked weapons, and a couple new features. Of course, and fortunately for us and the gaming industry, the scope widened for the game instead of shortened.
More features were added, the story was extended, firefight became a huge feature, yadda yadda yadda. Halo 3: ODST became more than a small expansion on the engine, but an expansion with enough content to be fully priced as a regular game (it has more content than some $60 games on the shelf today, I think everyone will agree with that).
So now, people are confused, and questioning why Halo 3: ODST is $60 because "it's not fair cause it's only an expansion!!!" True, it's an expansion, but it's an expansion that went above and beyond over time, and has enough content to validate the price.
Some people are confused and questioning why it's called Halo 3: ODST when it "has nothing to do with the Halo 3 storyline. These people either don't understand that it's not supposed to be it's own, new game, or they don't understand that the only reason Halo 3 is included is because it runs of an engine IDENTICAL to Halo 3, regardless of the changes/tweaks.
To close, changes and tweaks do not change an engine. You can build an entirely different game off an engine, and still have it be the same.
