What's wrong with natal? I'm sure they'll have a good use for it.

In my opinion, it would completely kill the Halo experience. It would turn it into something incredibly childish.

A mock? seriously?, anyways, How long have you been playing the Halo series? I'm used to Halo in a certain way, I don't want it dumbed down, child's version of the game.

You guys seem to miss the point that Natal will probably not have anything to do with gameplay, it'll probably be used to customize or to make a few things easier.

OR they could make a side game that plays like Halo, except you use your body to move and crotch and stuff, and have a custom game controller shaped like a gun with buttons.

In either case you will most likely still be able to play Halo the way you always have with the controller at least in the main game.

You have no faith in Bungie.

  • 06.12.2009 1:46 AM PDT

What if using Natal was only optional, and you could still play with a controller?

"Bungie controls everything. You have no rights. Play nice."

For the last time its TURRETS not TORRENTS. A TORRENT is either a peer to peer file sharing protocol or a violently fast stream of water. A TURRET is a self-contained weapons platform housing guns and capable of rotation. And TURRENT isn't even a word.

Reach doesn't have to be 100% Natal or 100% controller based. A balanced mix of the two would be awesome. For instance, Natal's voice recognition could be used to A) eliminate the need for headsets B) allow multiple players to issue multiple commands to their own group of marines in co-op or C) allow for the incorporation of interactive trash talking in campaign where your AI opponents are capable of making comebacks when you insult them in certain ways.

That last one would be awesome.

That's the thing though, I don't want to gameplay 100% with natal, I just want to use voice configuration for trash talking, but I also don't want to talk in scenes where your character is talking, tbh theres gonna be a lot of complications concerning natal with reach, I think the best thing is to just let reach stay with controllers.

Still, a few voice commands would be interesting. For instance, in some menu, what if you could assign certain actions a voice command?

you could for instance assign switching weapons with an AI ally to a voice cue, or perhaps even influence AI behavior. Interactive cutscenes could be going too far, but trash talking an Elite with a your mom joke and have having the Elite actually respond by getting angrier would be pretty entertaining. Having the Elite respond with a similar joke (perhaps if Reach has an IWHBYD skull) would be even better.

My basic point is that some parts of Natal could be integrated into Reach without changing the core gameplay too much from what we're used to.

More like just reacting to my comments. For instance, I insult a Brute's mother, and it has a chance of going into rage mode. The more you do this, the more likely other Brutes are likely to catch on to what you're doing and not rage, but the first one or two would be just about guaranteed. Or threatening to rip a grunts arms off and beat him to death with them (sergeant Johnson style) causes said grunt to panic and run away. Occasionally (perhaps with a certain skull active if Reach has it) there will be combat dialogue where the AI responds to your insults with comedic insults of their own. It would be incredibly immersive to have your dialogue affect the AI.

It would also be pretty awesome to walk up to a marine and be able to vocally interact with them on a basic level. Walk up to marine, give vocal commands for basic strategy, commence attack. You could possibly tall your marines to hang back until you've killed all the Brutes/Elites in an area, then come out guns blazing to clean up the jackals/grunts. Or tell them to charge into battle after you've taken out the snipers.

I some how think that may be pushing the envelope just a bit. Voice recognition isn't easy and I doubt that Natal will have the software to recognize complex commands or insults.

Made an account in 2006. Visited Bungie.net in 2005. Joined Xbox Live in 2005. It's amazing to see how the site, Bungie, and Halo have evolved over the years. Utterly amazing.

You guys know that Halo: Reach probably wont be 100% Natal, right?

  • 06.12.2009 3:11 AM PDT

that sounds awesome man, I would love for Bungie to do that!

It wouldn't have to. Most jokes are pretty simple and patterned. It would only have to look for part of a joke ("Your mom is _______," "You are a _______," "I'm going to ________," "see you in hell," etc...)

Then it would have stored preset reactions that it would try to match up with to your insults. It could also listen for keywords like ugly, stupid, curse words, and more. If you started cursing for instance, the game might assume you were frustrated, then take advantage of it by making the AI more aggressive. If you were calm, the game might try to lull you into a false sense of security by making the AI more docile.

We don't know how complex Natal's audio sensors will be. It might even be able to tell tone of voice and just react to that.

"Violence isnt the answer, but it sure is the solution"

It hasnt been confirmed at all, and there hasnt been any evidence that it will use it. And plus that website seems to be wrong about other things. With their deciphering of the Silhouettes. They seem to think that master cheif is a definite in there, yet in the books, cheif isnt on Reach when it falls, hence his survival.

That article is complete conjecture, with no solid proof. Just because bungie say yeah natal is preaty neat doesn't mean that it will be used in Reach.
We have no idea if this is the jackson project. In fact it probably isn't, this is a bungie game. I think jackson set up a games company himself, Wingnut or something.
In the announcment video it says Bungie and microsoft, not Wingnut and Microsoft.
Natal doesn't really have a place in FPS i think.

Dead Mans Hand-Always Loaded.

I WAS SOCK

I love the idea of Bungie working with Natal. I know the feel of Halo is set in, but its Bungie were talking about. If they work on making a game using Natal, they're going to do it right. Simple as that.

I would assume however, that they will make it so you don't have to use Natal. But, imo, I would probably use Natal 95% of the time, it would make you feel so much more into the game than a controller.

  • 06.12.2009 3:59 AM PDT

jumal was here

at first, i didn't like this idea, but now that i think about it, it could be used in some ways to make halo even more asome. mabye bungie will finally let us drive a pelican useing natal. i would love that.
