Well yeah.I mean games may be fun, but there is a lot of hard work and effort put into them. They are very serious buisness. (Making them, that is)
The ODST's launch from a ship orbiting above the planet (or maybe a space station), but not the space elevator. So I expect that the great detail is just because Bungie wanted to make a great game.
