We all witnessed the Halo: Reach teaser trailer and I for one thought it was cool but like everyone else...it didn't give us enough information. One thing the trailer does manage to do is spark a bunch of crazy unbelievable theories that start flame wars. I am going to tell you all of my theories and some facts to back them up.
First off as we can all tell the trailer shows the beginning of what is known as the Battle for Reach. Now there is a lot of speculation saying it follows the book Halo: The Fall of Reach entirely or is a mix between that and some of the book "Halo: First Strike". I have read every Halo book out there and am a hardcore Halo fan. I play the game soley because of the amazing story, so I know what is realistic in the Halo universe and lore. I personally believe the following as possible outcomes of what the game will be about. These theories of mine will no doubt be supported by both facts and my knowledge of the Halo universe.
Theory 001 and a bunch of facts
-----------------------
The game no doubt takes place during the Battle of Reach having the player take on the role of a spartan. Now before I continue I want to make it clear the in the trailer there are two spartans, spartans that have never even been heard of until now. Most likely they are not Class II spartans due to the fact that Dr. Halsey never continued that due to failing with her SINGLE patient Yasmen. This means that these two spartans are two of the thirty that participate in the battle. This doesn't make sense though because if we play as either of these two spartans then we will infact die(Class I or Class II). These two spartans never even make it to CASTLE base to hide from the glassing by the Covenant, so I personally don't see Spartan-259 or 320 being a main character.
If you listen carefully during the trailer after the guy says, "What was that!", you hear someone say, "We're going in hot, we just lost our bird!". Those of you who have read the book Halo: First Strike you easily be able to relate that with Fred. Fred was order by John to lead the ground ops to protect the MAC generators while, himself, Linda, and James went into orbit to destroy nav data. Fred and the remaining spartans took a pelican to groundside. While they were going to the surface they were hit by Covenant plasma and forced to jump out of the pelican to the surface from what I believe to be about a mile or more above the surface. This fits perfectley with that dialogue. They were coming in hot due to being shot at and then they lost their pelican(or bird, which yes pelicans are occasionlly referred to as birds in the book. It is also the only known ship that is called that from my knowledge) due to jumping out or dying. That is why he said, "We lost our bird!". Even though there were a bunch of pelicans why do you think BUngie singled out that one which sounds totally like the spartan's pelican? Hmmm, also just the voice has that spartan feel to it. No fear, crisp words.
Think this through if you are in a ship and it blows up you die, you wouldn't say, "We lost our bird" because you would be dead. If you jump out of your ship what do you say? "We lost our bird and are forced to jump, otherwise I would be dead due to not abandoning ship". So like I said that voice most likely is Fred. Now of course the spartans wouldn't have landed, recovered, and set up shop that quickly but that was Bungie's way of summing up the situation and giving us an idea of what the game is about. Plus the Covenant couldn't have hit Reach's surface that fast when the MAC stations were holding the Covenant back as well as the Navy. That is why the Covenant sent ground forces, to destroy the MAC generators.
To top it off at the end you hear, "You got spartans on the ground sir, we're not going anywhere." This proves that the voice is a spartan and relates to how the spartans were ordered to protect the generators meaning they weren't going anywhere.
Now the main battle of Reach was a Navy fight and we know it's an FPS involving spartans. The actual ground battle in the book Fall of Reach only lasted a few hours....seriously. After that the story starts into First Strike, where the spartans retreat to castle base. Take note while this actual ground battle is happening Chief and the Pillar of Autumn left the system and are finding Halo. So the spartans are overun by Covenant the majority die except a few. Fred, Kelly, Will, and few others retreat to the base and seek refuge.
Turns out Dr. Halsey is inside, She lets them in, they get some upgrades and repairs to their suits (they did fall a long way). These upgrades are some Mark VI tech(not the actual suit just software and some other goodies). They hide there for a few days and this is when Chief gets off Halo meets up with Johnson and a few others and goes back to Reach to retrieve his team. He manages to get to the surface where he meets up with Whitcomb and two other spartans. After this they make it into castle base(with no spartans 259 or 320) and then get chased by the covenant who are digging for an artifact and to kill them. The spartans get the artifact and leave. They capture a Covenant ship fight, find an insurgent base and get help, then get ready to destroy the majority of the Covenant fleet prepped for Earth.
So basically if the game ONLY takes place during the main Battle of Reach then it would be way to short for a game. Most likely it takes place between Fall of Reach and First Strike. This also means that only part of the game is a prequel. Also the spartans hide down in castle base for days meaning that would be hard to fit into the game, just a random 4 days later. So really I have no idea what's up with the game but that is just most likely what it will be about.
Theory 002 and some speculation(Highly Unlikely)
---------------
There is a new Halo comic coming out ivolving a secret spartan team that does stuff for ONI and has somwhat upgraded armor (a MJOLNIR suit that is half way between Mark V and VI, they're testing the beta version or something). While the actual comic is a prequel but has nothing to do with Reach, We still might be playing as them, this also explains the armor in the banner that definately isn't Mark V even though the spartans had it during the Battle of Reach.
Also look at these silhouettes up close. We can all agree that those Spartans are NOT wearing Mark V armor. Unless Bungie changed the way it looks for this game but then that would make playing Halo CE akward do to the change of looks. My best guess is that it is either the Mark IV suit or the spartans in the comic(which I HIGHLY doubt). So I am assuming that it is the Mark IV.
Thoery 003(Unlikely but I sort of find it possible)
-----------------
Like just mentioned above, the armor looks like the Mark IV. The game is called Halo: Reach. It could either be the initial ground battle of Reach or the defense of the other planets that are being fought for so the Covenant don't make it into the inner colonies ot find Reach and then Earth. I say this because the main battle of Reach on the ground with the other spartans is only a few hours. After that they are just basically hiding from the Covenant until Chief comes. Quickly I want to say this, Chief, Linda, and James went to destroy the NAV data while the other spartans were just going groundside.
So if you do play as the Chief it will be the first level because by the time the main ground battle happens Chief has already left in the Pillar of Autumn. Back to the reasons. The majority of the game would be running from the Covenant further into CASTLE base. The spartans were down there for days hiding. So how would they fit that into the game? "Uh random 4 days later", that wouldn't be a huge deal but after that(this is now during the book First Strike by the way) Chief would come and they would fight and then leave and do operation first strike. The only main epic battle would be first strike and the ground battle.
The other idea is that we would be fighting on Sigma Ocatnus IV. That was a huge battle leading to the battle of Reach. The spartans had teh Mark IV suits and the battle was huge and epic. It is highly unlikely though due to it really having nothing to do with Reach.Just think about this stuff. We will just have to wait a little bit longer to actually get a BETTER idea of who we are playing as and whats going on.
Newest theory
-----------------------------
I found out a few days ago that the second spartan from the right is NOT Kelly. If you have eyes and a brain you can easily tell that is James. Why? Well look at his right arm. From the elbow down it is extremely skinny, odd shaped sorta like a robotic arm, overall shorter compared to the other arm even though they both are at the same resting point.
James lost his arm from the elbow down during the battle of Sigma Ocatanus IV fighting hunters. You can tell that it is a robotic arm just by looking. You can't not agree with me, it's pretty obvious. Everyone is like, "LInda and the sniper, Fred and the knife, John in the middle, Sam and the heighth, blah blah blah. Well guess what, Sam isn't in the game nor is he in the picture. James replaced Kurt and who replaced Kurt? Oh thats right James!!!!! This proves that Sam is not in the game. Now the only person on the left would be Kelly or some other spartan, but still most likely Kelly. I can't find anywhere in the book about Kelly being shorter than the other spartans. I found this out myself.
Not about the whole book
-------------------
If it was about the whole book it would be a movie not a game. Just think about that.
Due to James and his robotic arm this shows that most likely the game will overall take place during the battle of Reach and not before, which I believed until now. Need more info!!! Discuss.
