Subject: New Game Engine for Reach?

This is my signature nub.

Halo 3: ODST uses the same engine as Halo 3 (hence the "3" in it's name). With no "3" in Halo: Reach, this may suggest a new engine for Halo.
Thoughts?

  • 06.13.2009 4:01 PM PDT

I think so. I'm not up to date with Reach so I wouldn't know for sure.

It'll be pretty cool to see a new game engine introduced.

  • 06.13.2009 4:05 PM PDT

it willl use halo 1 engine cuz there is no number

  • 06.13.2009 4:09 PM PDT

Agreed

yes because if it didn't then the graphics wouldn't be as good as the ones in the trailer

Bungie All Star Contest Winner Weeks 6,8 and 12

The teaser was most likely done in CG. Reach will also most likely be running on an updated engine that Bungie has used in the past.

With the exception of Halo 3 ODST, Bungie has never used the same engine twice.

Jesus loves you, but everyone else thinks you're a twat.

chances are it will be a highly upgraded/modified version of the halo 3 engine.. and please for the love of god people dont expect crazy amazing graphics, the game is still running on the 360 so there will not be that much of a leap in graphics

No game in the past 5 years has used exactly the same engine as another game, with the exception of expansions.

I hope that it will allow you to use cover.

The ability to use cover would be far too GoW, in my opinion.

I agree.

I think Reach will be running on a heavily modified version of the Halo 3 engine, but I could be wrong.

Well since it's coming out in a year, I doubt they would use the outdated Halo 3 Engine (maybe an updated version of it though), but the physics in the H3 engine suck. For the Mongoose and Warthogs especially.

I hope that Reach has a new graphics engine for its sake. I do not want to see Reach ridiculed for its graphics like Halo 3.

H3 had great graphics, it was just too bright, colorful and cheery to feel like a serious game...

90% of all game engines are just modified version of someother engine.

Bungie used the Havok game engine for Halo 3 ( Elder Scrolls 5: Oblivion uses this same engine)... It is very likely that they will use it again... It did wonders for Halo 3 in my opinion...

Look I'm a huge Halo fan, but I'll be a realist colours are one thing but the polygon count, and the texture in Halo were... mediocre, also the frame rate was slow, and and a bit iffy. I'll be ready for the flame.

A new engine could mean new tricks! And it could mean disaster...(e.g BxR), not saying that's going to happen and what not.

  • 06.13.2009 7:42 PM PDT

Seeing as it is also a different "Secret" Group at Bungie, I would doubt that they would be using the H3 engine.
Game wise we know nothing so by theory "anything" can happen

Lol! Yeah, because the trailer was in-game for sure. That was probably one of the funniest things I've read all day.

Who cares about BxR anymore?

I personally hope that there is a totally new engine, not a modified one.

No.

We require:

Object based motion blur

Real time reflections (For real this time)

Bullet holes on physical objects.

No stretchy ragdolls (but keep the resistance in the joints, that adds so much realism to the ragdolls few other games have)

Ambient occlution

Rudamentary DMM (Maybe the new Havoc destruction system? You guys have connections with them, right?)

Soft body physics (for trees and things, not just bewbz) It could be used for damage on vehicles so they don't always have to be pre broken.

Your particle system is perfect... No gripe there...

OH! The shadows... eh... yeah... They just pop out of existance... and they can't seem to decide what angle they want to cast from. The shadows could be more like the shadows from Watchmen: the end is nigh... Not a very good game, but the shadows were terriffic. They'd need to be more flexible though for a shooter engine.

Fix the highlights too. :/ Can't really say much. The highlights on all objects turn grey when they're under a shadow. That's not pretty.

Those are All my gripes on the current engine... All those things fixed/ features implemented, then the engine will be PERFECT.

PS: I like the dense high flying dirt chunks from the Halo 1 explosions. I want them back. NAO!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOL!! PLOX!!!

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Hopefully they will build from the ground up.

No.

That means they'dhave to have been working on this since the ship of Halo 2, or halfway through the production of H3. There's no way they'd make a 2010 release date if they started EVERYTHING from scratch.
