this gets too confusing!! so where the heck is he! did he went through or not?!

Well it's debatable wether or not he entered the portal or not.
I'll borrow this from another thread I saw a while back. Slipspace works like a hallway.
You enter in through a doorway, travel down the hallway, and come out another doorway. Apparently there a currents and eddies (like the sea) that can influence the jumps. The Forerunners had a extremely strong grasp of how it worked. The portal from Earth to the Ark, took a tiny amount of time compared to what it would have taken if using a Human or Covenant jump.

Anyway, The Chief could have either:
a) gone through successfully and ended up at Earth.
b) got left behind and died.
c) got left behind and survived.
d) got taken into the "hallway" and then broke off staying in Slipspace.
e) got taken into the "hallway", then broke off and finally reverted to Realspace.
f) got blasted into the past/future.

Now to take out the impossible ones:
a) didn't happen.
b) didn't happen.
c) unlikely.
d) plausible.
e) unlikely.
f) unlikely.

Finally we have these:
c) How did John survive? We don't know. It's probably not true, but it's a possibility.
d) How did the ship split in two? And what's that planet? I don't know about splitting in two, but I think that the planet is another Micro Diosphere that is shaped like a planetoid instead of a bowl shape (like the one in The Ghost of Onyx.
e) First off, how would he revert to Realspace? Virtually impossible.
f) There is a time/space continuum present inside of Slipspace, however it seems highly unlikely that they would be shunted through time. Consider the explosion though, it could have done something to the rupture making them somehow get pushed into the past/future.

All in all, I believe they are still in Slipspace and came to another micro Dyonsphere. However, there are several other possibilities present, and we cannot rule them out. Though, all those threads presenting evidence because of: Slipspace ruptures, blue lights, same explosion craters, etc. prove nothing.
Hope you got some questions answered and learned a thing or two.

cheif and cortana whent through the portal but the portal collapsed on them when they got to the end of the "hallway" thus flushing them into a random place in the galaxy

all this time travel stuff is a joke, and whoever came up with it watches to much stargate.

Its related to it cause of all the time travel theorists thinking that John ended up at Reach cause of the portal malfunctioning. See my above post for a little more information.

In the legendary ending their is no pieces of the ark floating around and their probably would not be a planet that near to the safe haven the forerunners created in the ark.

Time travel is possible, as it has happened before in the series (read First Strike). However, Chief did not have the necessary item to time travel, so Reach is not that planet.

for your information, portals aren't paper thin, the enite ship entered the portal, but only the front half made it through all the way, the back end being cut off and sent somewhere random. and before you yell at me, no I dont think there is going to be time travel, that would be stupid

Sorry...are you being naive? Its clear that the ship is going to be drifting through space for a long time...hence the slow eventual drift upon an unknown planet..
Also like the post above, the portals arent paper thin, it not necessarily like in one end out the other.

He DID go into the portal but when he did he got kicked out of slipspace due to closing. So the Arbiter went to Earth while he got sent to some random place. Fact. Otherwise he would have been completely destroyed by Halo. Other Fact.

Edit: I am not a time travel junkie, I am just saying that he did go through the portal.

I agree he didn't time-travel (that wouldn't make sense) but I think he did revert to Realspace.
In the Legendary ending, I believe Cortana said something about 'the portal collapsed just when we went through', so the Chief's end was sent into slipspace; however, the portal didn't exist long enough to give the second part of the ship the required 'push' to be sent back to earth. The first part (with the Arbiter) reverted to Realspace near earth- but how? Apparently, it automattically reverted. So, the Chief's part did, too, but it didn't end up at earth; it didn't get the fast start. So, it reverted to Realspace somewhere between the Ark (which is one million lightyears from the galactic centre) and earth.

here's an idea... PLAY HALO 3 UNTIL THE RELEASE OF ODST, PLAY THAT THEN WAIT ANOTHER YEAR, THEN FIND OUT INSTEAD OF PICK ON AT EACH OTHER ON THEORIES AND PLAY IT.

stupid caps button is broken...
