"It is impossible to prepare for and prevent a war at the same time"
-Albert Einstein

Before I begin, I'd like to warn you that this will be a massive post. It has a lot of raw information that I will interpret to make my point, but if you do read the entire thing, it will make sense. However, for those of you that are lazy, the last two paragraphs should sum everything up pretty well.

I will also reference Halo 3 as H3, Halo 2 as H2, Halo:CE as H1, Halo 3:ODST as ODST, and Halo:Reach as Reach. When I want to talk about the planet reach, I will say exactly that (just so there's no confusion) Also, during October of 2008, ODST was entitled Halo 3: Recon, so don't get confused if you're new to the site.

Ok. Recently I've been reading a lot of threads like "I want bungie to take their time to finish this game" and threads discussing whether or not Reach will use H3's multiplayer. Everything I'm going to show you is straight from a bungie top story (with links for proof).

First, here are a few quotes for raw material and i'll talk about them at the end.

Keep in mind that Halo 3: Recon, is on a shorter production cycle than our usual, all-hands-on-deck, three year long projects. (posted in the 10/17/08 Weekly Update located in the Q&A portion, question by PNut d kidnaper)

We're not ready to discuss the other projects underway within the studio right now
"Recon" represents one of several projects that we have underway within the Studio but it's the nearest to release and the only one we're able to talk about for now.
Development of "Recon" actually just began in earnest this past Spring. This project is in the hands of a small team and represents our most ambitious release cycle yet as a Studio. All three of the previous quotes are from the 10/10/08 Weekly Update located towards the bottom of the Q&A.

Despite not having a whole lot to officially say right now, rest assured there's no shortage of work on being done on Recon. With a recent milestone in the rearview mirror - there will be glut of new info about Recon in a few weeks - the Recon team continues to slam in new content at a feverish pace. This quote is from the 10/31/08 Weekly Update. Specifically the very first paragraph.

We're not going to dive too deeply into specifics now (obviously), but the entire studio was pulled "offline" on Wednesday - diverted from their other work - to play through Halo 3: ODST.This quote is from the 12/19/08 Weekly Update. Specifically the first sentence of the third paragraph underneath the ODST heading.

So what does all of this mean? Well the first quote is pretty obvious, bungie generally works on 3-year-long projects, with ODST being an exception. Looking back at the calendars over the past few years, H1 was released in 2001, H2 in 2004, H3 in 2007. What is projected to be released in 2010? Reach. So this supports the idea that Reach has been in development pretty much since the release of H3.

The next two quotes (the first two from the 10/10 update) are pretty obvious in showing that bungie had more up their sleeve than just ODST. But the third quote from that update tells us that ODST was actually the baby of the studio. Its the project with the small team, from which we can infer that some other project (or projects) is the real, main focus of the studios time and efforts. This matches with the 10/17 quote where bungie has a 3-year project that is "all hands on deck"

The 10/31 quote then supports what we established from the 10/10 and 10/17 quotes. ODST has its own small team assigned to it, because if you continue to read that update (follow the link), you'll see a list of only five people. Now this alone doesn't mean that the ODST team is only 10 people, but we've already established that it is small.

Finally in the 12/19 update, the verbiage used really helps us understand the magnitude of the team working on a different, hidden project. When they say the ENTIRE studio was pulled offline, that sends us a pretty big message. There are A LOT more people working on a different project than working on ODST.

So putting all of this together. Here are the things I would expect, probably within reason, from Reach. Now, everything from here on out is my speculation. There will probably be an entire new campaign, with entire new multiplayer, a new game engine (meaning different graphics) and everything else that comes with a brand new, full fledged game.

Bungie has also stated that ODST will be the final installment in the halo trilogy (from the 10/10 update), meaning that halo reach will be completely different from ODST and any of the other bungie-made halo games that we've played. It may in-fact take place in a completely different time period... leading to all those stupid time travel theories.

Now on the time travel theories, bungie has explicitly said that H3 was their last game that had the master chief as their main character (but this probably extends to a character in the game what so ever). So regardless of how much you want to play as master chief on reach in the future/past, it WILL NOT HAPPEN.

Finally, the main thing that I want to express through all of this is, Reach will be a full game and has been in development for some time already. Don't get worried about whether or not bungie will be able to finish the game in time, they've already been working on it for a year and a half.

I was already guessign this, as were others who watched some of Bungie' behind-the-scenes videos where they stated that Halo 3 was in production as soon as Halo 2 went gold, so it is almost completely, without-a-doubt possible that Bunie has been working on Halo: Reach since Halo 3 went gold. Thank you.

you're welcome. I'm trying to make the public understand that what has actually already been out there because I come across too many threads that have crazy theories about time travel and different styles of gameplay and how good this game is gonna be etc.

I agree with everything you have to say except the part where you said that Bungie said that Halo 3 was the last game in which the Chief would be the main character. If you could find the quote or link to where they said this it would clear up much confusion. I have read in the updates that ODST is the last of the games in the trilogy but that doesn't necessarily mean the end of Chief. Until then I believe we will play as Chief again someday just not in Reach.
