Subject: Should Halo Reach be more realistic than the past Halo's?

*Please note that this is an argument about GAMEPLAY realism, not GRAPHIC realism.

I've personally been watching this forum to view your ideas on how we could change Halo to accommodate our likes and dislikes. One topic I find particularly interesting is realism. There are a large amount of people on the forums who's ideas focus on making the Halo experience more realistic.

Listen up.

People don't come to play Halo for realism. Halo gives us a break from what is real to give us an entertaining experience, such as lobbing a sticky grenade 6000 feet , tagging a guy who is tea bagging your dead teammate. I think the Call of Duty series has secured the part of making the game more realistic, while halo has secured the position of making the game more fun.

Halo is still on top of other Xbox Live titles, not only because of the 4 player split-screen, or the deep campaign, or the pursuit of a better rank, but rather it leads because the playing field is even for everyone, and it has that "thing" other games don't have. It has a sense of imagination and a luck factor that make montages shine. Im sorry to CoD lovers, but you have to admit that a Halo 3 montage is more entertaining than a Call of Duty or Gears of War montage. This is simply because of that hilarious unrealism that keeps bringing people back.

So I hope that Bungie doesn't feel inspired by your feedback on this forum, because if they are influenced by the majority of you who want a more realistic approach, I am afraid you will be disappointed with Halo Reach.

Define "realism". As someone said, its a game that takes place 500 years in the future. That just kills your whole "realism" argument.

I am not arguing what realism is in Halo, I am arguing against the people who say Halo Reach's Gameplay should be more realistic. Too many do not grab the concept that Halo is a game that takes place in the future (as stated above), and thus are arguing that, in Reach, the beatdown should be toned down, we shouldnt throw grenades as far as we can, Spartans jump too high, it takes too many bullets to kill someone, etc.etc.

I absolutely agree. I think that this needs to be heard. i also agree with GuranAndrew for the fact that graphics could look more realistic, but gameplay should be left alone

^ That is a good point. ^

I'm expecting a tactical squad based shooter, similar to the Rainbow Six Vegas games. So yes, it should be more realistic.

You can't have realism when the game takes place 500 years in the future. Certain people may like realism, and other people just like shooting things and having a good time. Halo won't ever be realistic as long as it's that far in the future.

  • 06.14.2009 4:31 PM PDT

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

You are playing a genetically and technologically augmented soldier wearing a half-ton of armor and a strictly "yes sir!" attitude fighting not one, but several intergalactic races with a piss-poor view of humanity and religious zealous. If anyone wants realism in a Halo again may I suggest removing any Halo game you may have in your 360, placing it in the case and gathering up any other Halo games you may have. Then, I want you to put them away somewhere nice and safe until you have time to think about it a bit more.

I agree with you. However more realistic environments would be nice. But if Bungie sticks to the fun side I will still be happy.

First off Halo is not dead and second what changes could be made as to not turn it into another call of duty?

True. It is my opinion. But I think to make the game more realistic gameplay wise would be a huge mistake.

The games aren't realistic, and I doubt that will change. What they are though, is incredibly consistent.

First off saying that CoD is realistic is a non sequitur. Considering how in that game you can shoot through concrete walls with low grade 5.56mm bullets (deep impact), recover from a point blank 12.7mm round in a matter of seconds, etc. Second that is your opinion, I would not mind Halo Reach having realism.

Is it possible that people are mistaking two separate ideas?

Realism?

Improved Graphics?

I am getting the feeling that the people asking for it to be more realistic are really asking for improved graphic quality - or am I totally mistaken? Frankly I think that they should improve the graphic detail in Reach as H3, though it is very nice, is nearly 2 years old.

As far as realism goes, I think the posts above definitely address the fact that the game by it's very nature is unrealistic (augmented super soldier with armor that sports an invisible shield wielding shoulder fired laser cannons...)

I agree with graphic upgrades. Thats awesome. i just dont want my spartan, punching any less harder or throwing any less further because "its not realistic".

I think that's more in the ODST department.

Please Bungie. PLZ!!!! Dont make halo a Rainbow Six :( I will cry. I...I.... just cant take it :,( I am the biggest halo fan on earth, and i know that there is sooooooooo much potential in Reach that it make me drool just thinking about it. I love you bungie make this one good for me!

It should have the realistic look of Halo 2. Halo 1 and 2 were A LOT more realistic than Halo 3. More realistic look, no bubbleshields and regens, no spartan laser, better beatdown systems, better levels, warthog turrets took skill and weren't as accurate as a BR. If they do make it completely new then make it have a Halo 1 and 2 feel.

I would actually like a Halo-R6V feel to it. Having Spartans in Mark IV suits killing Covenant during the 2530 and 40s.

it doese'nt look nextgen , looks good but not nextgen
If by next-gen you mean crappy, dark and colorless, I agree. It doesnt look next-gen at all.

Define "realism". As someone said, its a game that takes place 500 years in the future. That just kills your whole "realism" argument.

  • 06.14.2009 9:35 PM PDT

Well it does have to have a plausible scientific explination so thats kind of realism....

  • 06.14.2009 9:37 PM PDT

graphics: a little bit
Gameplay: I believe its fine the way it is

Hmmm...

Interesting post. I believe that Halo should only improve its graphics for realism. But like many others are saying, leave the game play alone. I wouldn't want armor perms that give advantages either. But yeah. Halo is fine how it is.
