My idea: if a thread is inactive for a certain period of time, it is automatically locked. This will prevent threads being brought back from the dead while still being readable. This would not apply to stickies and mods could unlock them if they wanted.

Any thoughts?

Hmmm. It could be good i guess...but what if we just had say all pages up to the latest 30, deleted each month?

What? They're like the archives! The great bungie archives, crowded with wisdo- oh...

Well, people tend to be nostalgic.

It would be not bad of an idea to see all threads locked after like a few weeks...

But one thing....

WHY would somebody go to the lengths to search up an old topic back on the 100th page and bump it back up?

It happens a lot more than you think it would.

Just wait until the search function is implemented, bumping of old threads will be the norm.

They should not be locked. If a thread that is old and has been brought back to life for no reason, the moderators will take care of it. Some old threads can be taken care of.

Yes, but the moderators shouldn't need to take care of it.

No, locking old threads means that people will constantly create new threads (like they do now) when there is an old one on the same topic, even after the search function arrives.

If new topics are made, they will sink just like the old ones and be locked.

Any mods opinions would be appreciated.

Thats why it is comming soon tm
Also Bumping is against the code of conduct so don't (even though it happens in the clasifieds all the time.)

I know "bumping" is against the rules, that is not what I necessarily meant. When the search function becomes available (which I also know is Coming Soon™), people will do a search on a particular subject and come across a thread in which they want to participate, and then they will reply and bump* the thread up. So, even though what they are doing is well within their rights because that is why the search function is available, they may be bumping* a thread that has been dead for months. So, as I had stated previously, bumping* of old threads will become the norm.

Note: The word bump and any of its variations denoted with * used in the above commentary does not imply a worthless reply that brings the topic up to the first page, but rather a comment that is part of the conversation and has the same effect of bringing the topic to the first page.

Yes, but the moderators shouldn't need to take care of it.

So old threads that are good should be locked?

Well instead of bringing a thread back to life, why not just make a new one and delete old threads?

That depends on your definition of good. If all the threads after, say page 10 are locked, then it will only be inactive threads that are locked.

Pruning defeats part of the purpose of a search tool. As for locking old threads, it's really not that big of a deal and some threads are actually worthy of being bumped with new information.

As for locking old threads, it's really not that big of a deal and some threads are actually worthy of being bumped with new information.

I was going to make that point myself, having just revived a thread asking about Bungie-related sites in Chicago I started last February in order to let people know how the trip had turned out and to thank them for their help. Just putting a "thank you" post at the end saved starting a whole new thread and explaining everything again from the ground up.

As for pruning, there are some favourite threads I still have marked in my browser that I like to return to now and then, so I'd oppose that unless space really became a crunch. Besides, if I understand it correctly it's not storage space that's the problem here but indexing space and indexing horsepower... old threads don't consume much of that, whereas searching gulps that down like beer at a frat party.

-- Steve's prepared to be wrong on that, though... his coding days are decades past and long obsolete. *sigh*
