I have read the books since I got them back in like 2001 or something like that, and judging by the trailer, You will most likely play as a Spartan (indicated by the soldiers in teh uber art) but playing an ODST/Marine isnt out of the question either.
Now I do believe after two years, the guys at bungie have prob gained more counter parts into the complex system that is bungie, and HAVE made a better Game engine for this new Halo title. If the Visuals and the sheer openness of Halo 3: ODST was of any clue, I Do think that Halo Reach WILL be more open then EVAR.
The Story line will prob either begin as you playing one of the various remaing Spartans on the pillar of Autumn before the covenant show up and you are shipped to Reach VIA Pelican, then rough re-entry. In the books there are several Spartans present, but there names or Identification Spartan tags are not revealed, You could play as them. And then the game would then span to you help defend the bases scattered around Reach that Will ultimately fall to the Covenant Glassing the planet.
But since Reach is technically the home planet to the Spartans (I?, II yes, III were trained on Onyx), I would suspect that in the begging of the game goes to the early life development of the Spartan-II program, which be more Anti-Rebel/Terrorism Counter Insurgency stuff. Many fans have been asking for something, Especially when they were implemented as a npc faction in Halo Wars, The ability to fight against the Colony Rebels. Spartan-II's where made to suppress and stop the rebellion in the outer colonies of Earths UNSC Empire. and then the covenant show up and then your onto reach going with my first idea up there.
I dont know how a marine or ODST role could be put into this game how ever just because in the books, the Initial invasion of reach, And as you can see in the trailer, The covenant have ease decimating everything in there way in a short amount of time. So if you were playing a Marine or ODST you would end up being 1 or few survivors that would eventually die off anyways, The book Fall of Reach describes well basically the Marines got STOMPED DA **** outa em.
But now i will return to the open world theory of this game. In the Books, when Fred and most of the able bodied Spartans get to a base with bout four marines, the scenery and area is described as full out armeggedon, fire thousands of charred bodies and empty carcases of vehicles, Which mostly in my opinion will have you fighting not multiply but hundreds of Grunts and the other covies in a assorted bag o treats . Seeing as how your a spartan your survival rate is much more greater then that of a marine.
Expect lots of more gun fire and raith bombardment along with banshee bombing runs. Lots of epic action and beautiful scenery as well. and the best utmost destruction ten fold as seen from ODST,s ruined New Mombassa.
I dont know how far Bungie will go from the book to game factor but one thing is for certain, if the game is to suceed it will have to go with the book in order to be a success.
I would wright more but i need to go now so bye :P
