Subject: Halo 3: ODST is NOT an expansion.

I have been looking around the Halo 3:ODST Forum lately and I have noticed that many posters keep referring to ODST as an expansion.

[Ex. A demo wouldn't work well because ODST is just a campaign expansion.]
[Ex. 0mG cAN't waiaiTTT 4 ExPaNsIoN ODST lolololol!]

Well, for those who haven't noticed, Halo 3: ODST is not going to be an expansion. It will be its own game that will provide its own gaming experience, similar (but not the same as) Halo 3's gaming experience. It will come with its own campaign and cooperative gameplay modes that will not require Halo 3 to play. It will pla on its own disc and will not be downloaded for play on the Halo 3 disc.

Also, ODST cannot be referred to as an expansion because of its added content. Just because it comes with Halo 3 multiplayer maps (which will require a Halo 3 disc with multiplayer) [Also, as a side-note, I refer to map packs and similar downloads to be expansions because they extend a game's experience.] doesn't mean ODST is an expansion in itself.

To sum up this thread topic, ODST does not extend Halo 3's gameplay, but creates a new realm of gameplay different from Halo 3's.

Thank you for that post. I am not sure why someone would ODST as an expansion when it offers different and new forms of gameplay that, indeed, play similar to Halo 3.

He who dares wins

Isn't it a standalone expansion?

Doesn't World of Warcraft have expansion packs that also contain new missions and areas? Sounds like ODST to me. But that doesn't mean it will suck.

no sir.

the game is basically taking on a life of it's own.

it has shared multiplayer, as well as a variation of it's own, a campaign which could lead up to several days of play

and new customization features.

If something is described with "standalone", how can it be expanding on something? (That is a serious question)

Also, it is not actually adding to Halo 3's gameplay, so... no, it isn't an expansion.

If WoW does have these expansions (which I believe it does) than they are adding new missions and areas to WoW, not, for example, WoW: Dragon's Lair.

I'm not sure how it qualifies for that title, but i know of some that exist, Dawn of War dark crusade and Dawn of War Soul Storm, are standalone expansions to the original Dawn of War Game.

It is.

The OP wanted to show just how angsty he is by going against proven fact.

It is still an expansion, why else call it Halo 3: ODST? Why not Halo: ODST?

I do agree with your statement OP, but Bungie has referefed to it as an expansion themelves.

It uses Halo 3 models, animations and the bulk of the weapons/ equipment. Same enimeies too.

However, I'm veiwing it as a seperate campaign experience, not an expansion.

that was the original idea, but as the podcast says they have developed it into a ful fledged game now.

as to the OP

the second disc is not just the maps, it is the full multiplayer experience. there is no campaign, but you can put the disc in and play just like the halo 3 disc

Oh dang! That man just ordered breakfast in the middle of my rap song!

I don't see ODST as a full game at all, but more of an expansion. New gameplay and game modes aside, imo, it's not a full-fledged game.

you can't just put aside certain facts to try to make your point valid. those things that your are putting aside and basically telling use to ignore in your statement are proof of how this has turned into a full fledged game.

I want my steaks Luke...

You're right and wrong. Halo 3 ODST is not an straight forward expansion of halo 3's gameplay of course... but it is an expansion. Everybody is misinterpreting bungie with their words. Bungie only said that Halo 3 ODST is an expansion to the storyline... as in halo, but it is not, I repeat NOT, a true game wise expansion of halo 3 besides the fact it comes with the halo 3 side disk.
This is truth...

I believe people are calling it an expansion simply because it is built on the Halo 3 engine. But yes, it is a whole new game.

If you don't remember, Bungie referred to it as an expansion a while back. If Bungie refers to it as an expansion, it is an expansion.

I'm not putting them aside, I'm incorporating them. Acknowledging them. That's what "aside" means in the context. I'll rephrase if it makes you feel better...

Even after including the new gameplay and game mode into the consideration process, imo, Halo 3: ODST is not a full-fledged game.

No. It was going to be an expansion. It is a full game now.
