Shock Troopers are generally better armed, armoured troopers that are not main-line infantry; but there for support. Basically Commandoes.

Rangers and Marines are also known as Light Infantry Shock Troops. They're known for being very destructive and aggressive. Their training is way better and more "high speed" than regular infantry. They're elite, but not on a SEAL or Delta level though.

I think shock could either mean:
A) They are trained to do horrific things that terrify the enemy, or "shocking them" or
B) They are there to just scare the crap out of the enemy or lighten opposition before the main force comes in

Basically they are there to do the dirty work.

I'm guessing they are named after real life Shock Troops.

Oh dang! That man just ordered breakfast in the middle of my rap song!

They freaking jump out of spaceships into the warzone. Any more explanation necessary? :)

Shock troops often lead the attack and are designed to punch a hole in the enemy lines. That's part of what ODST's do, that's why the "Shock" is in the name.

The Other Side of Gaming!

Or maybe it's because they drop from the sky or space, whilst entering the earths stratosphere or one of the "spheres" and they could be associated with "lightning" because they come out of no were, so fast and shiny. Then they shock you like lightning, Lightning shock... yes, no? Maybe? I'm crazy?

It's shock trooper. Shock troopers are usually the first lines. And usually the most aggressive.

ODSTs are usually send really close, or inside enemy lines, and they're aggressive as hell...

Canadians troops were the shock troopers of WW1.

Shock refers to the infantry that are sent in first to an engagment and lead an attack.

I am flatterd that you botherd to look at my signature.

a shock trooper is the same as a storm trooper. you know storming the base.. usely it means they are mostly on the offensive. a shock trooper fights with many kinds of weapons.

they are suposed to inspire fear to the enemy get the job done quick and eficiently.

many shock troopers were known to use gurila tactics move fast and punch hard..

there not cavlery the don't exactly march into combat. they strike for the weak points they fight smart rather than hard. usely go in as small strike teams.. not a full invasion force.

lolz. Stormtroopers.

and anyway, on topic, i always thought it was for how they went into battle. you know, they're troopers, they drop from orbit, and the "shock" in their names is from when they land.

Because "ODT's" would sound super lame.
