I really dislike it when people say "lol uf corse it is based on the book fall of reach u will plese notice the word 'falls' and 'reach' in the same sentance and u would also notice that reach falls in the fall of reach lolol" -- you are incorrect. In many ways.
Reach doesn't even fall in Halo: The Fall of Reach. Halo: TFoR only deals with the first 15 minutes of the space battle, in the last couple chapters. It shows us the combat of 3 Spartans on a 15 minute space battle in which two are KIA, and the survivor, the Master Chief, returns to the PoA and enters cryosleep before Halo 1. This would not make a fun game. 15 minutes?
You know how Halo 3: ODST "drops" onto shelves September 22? I believe that the "falls" 2010 means that is when the game falls onto shelves, but also the fall of the Spartans of Red Team to the surface of Reach.
The Spartans of Red Team were shot down out of the sky at about the time the Chief returned to the Pillar of Autumn to leave for Halo (Halo 1). About 15 minutes ater, the PoA fled the system and went to Alpha Halo. This is when Halo: TFoR ends.
The real battle of Reach is shown in the beginning of Halo: First Strike. It details what happens to the Red Team Spartans. Now, I highly doubt that we will be playing as any known Spartan. If Spartan-259 and -320 from the trailer are playable (or main) characters, it would not fit in with the canon. Fred split his Spartans up when they reached the orbital defense generator facility, as they needed to tackle numerous missions.
Team Alpha (-104, -087, -029) were not ever with a -259 or -320. They were trapped for about two weeks in CASTLE base, with no enemies around.
Team Beta (11 unnamed) were left to defend the orbital generator facility. They are the only team with at least 5 members (the number of sillhouettes in the banner), and also the only one which could have included a combat-effective Spartan-259 or -320.
Team Gamma (-093, -044, -008) were not with a -259 or -320.
Team Delta (-043, -030, -039, and 3 unnamed) were crippled. The named Spartans rallied with Team Alpha, and were stuck in the enemy-less CASTLE base for about two weeks; they were not with a -259 or -320. The 3 unnamed were MIA, but since they didn't recieve the medical attention of Halsey in CASTLE base, they would likely remain crippled; not good for gameplay hobbling through a hectic battlefield for 9 hours.
Thesis: Halo: REACH will probably be based partially on the events at the end of TFoR (to set us up for how Red Team gets sent to the surface), and the beginning of FS (to set up how Red Team splits up), and the main characters are probably members from Team Beta, and will have no contact with Fred, Kelly, Isaac, etc. who were stuck in CASTLE base (though it's possible we meet up with the Gammas at some point).
If this is the case, the game will offer us a new perspective on the battle of Reach, while still showing us events already depicted in the novel (which would not make for a full-length game alone). You can take a look at my own vision of this alternate perspective here.
