Subject: Halo Reach and Natal

Well you know that MS is going to be pushing Natal next year.
And you know that they will want Reach to use it in some way...

I still think Reach will use a controller but also use Natal in some ways. But not require it.
Here are a few ideals...

1. Head turns to look left or right while still moving in another direction.
2. Leaning your body to peak around corners {if that is part of the game}.
3. Beatdowns, Quickly Thrust your controller forward to beatdown.
4. The controller becomes the steering wheel when you are driving a vehicle.
5. Some voice commands.

Can you think of anything else?

Do you think for a minute that MS isn't pushing Bungie hard to utilize Natal?

Favorite video game series: Professor Layton or Half-Life
Favorite video game: Super Mario Galaxy
Favorite movie series: Pixar (It's not really a series, but I just can't pick.)
Favorite movie: Inception

No, if you looked left, how the hell will you see the screen.

Bungie, please, just don't turn this into Metriod Prime 3, it's happening to Dead Space, so just don't get tempted.

You have a good point, however, Microsoft will make sure that every strong franchise on their console utilizes Natal at one point. It'd actually be pretty nice, to play Halo being MasterChief, just not the way you're saying. You are making it like a Wii game, where you move your controller and only do certain actions. I think to give Halo: Reach a good feel, the game will have you perform all the movements MasterChief will, not just pushing controllers, etc. What do I want for Halo: Reach? No controller necessary, kicking, punching, object picking up/throwing, real jumping, real crouching (and teabagging), real climbing, real controls for vehicles, etc.

i sure as hell hope not
i love controllers
i don't want to use natal ever in any game not how i want to play

I really don't feel like going to boot camp so that I can play Halo on Natal, the only people that would be able to do it is Navy Seals and Army Rangers.

MC doing his wicked stuff like he does.

PEANUT-BUTTER SLAP!

I have very serious doubts about Reach using NATAL.

Shotgun! :)
E74 sucks :(

think doing all these actions all the time would get a bit annoying? think natal on reach would just complicate a few things.

Obviously looking around would be impossible so they wouldn't do something like that. My main concern would be that they make you purchase the natal camera. If that ends up being the case I'm not buying, unless it looks really really cool.

Bringing you lame jokes, social awkwardness and the occasional good idea since 2008

I don't think Reach will use Natal, its been in development for too long before Natal, and FPS games don't usually utilize motion controls unless its the Wii and there is no other choice.

Anything is possible, and I for one would welcome a change by using Natal for a Halo game. It could be good for non-playing reasons as well, perhaps it could be used for Machinima, have your character replicate what you're doing in real life?

I just hope it understands wehat im doing, like if I want him to run, Im not going to run around my living room and everyone knows how fake running in place looks.

Natal isn't even coming out anytime soon. Why the hell would they make a multiplayer Beta for a peripheral that no one owns? You're dumb.

Thank you! Since we're getting a beta before the release of Natal, we are most likely not going to use Natal in Reach. If they make another Halo game after Reach, then it's possible that motion control will be used.

Besides, motion control and FPS do not mix well.

fantastic argument, your a lawyer arent you, you sure do have a way with words.

I hope to God that natal isnt used with Halo Reach because if it does, it will be one of the first games to implement it and will probably be deeply flawed.
i dont wanna be waving my arms around and running on the spot like an idiot, i want to be immersed in the story and enjoy the gameplay, rather than be forced to perform stupid swings and waggles.

Bungie will be betraying their fanbase if they release a casual turd because of Natal.

I'd take voice commands and basic hand gestures for manipulating the user interfaces, but not for critical game actions.

Still, the devs have the hardware and their creative abilities in this realm are far beyond our own. If Bungie feels that Natal can contribute in some unique way to the in-game experience then I'll give it a chance.

Any use of Natal would be optional, though. The install base will not be 100%.

It's not like the ENTIRE FREAKING GAME will use it. Just campaign, or another kind of mode. not in matchmaking. I agree, that would be retarded, but look at it this way.

Imagine the scene where Halsey flips the Coin, and John has to catch it, with Project Natal, you would have to reach out and catch the coin, the way you call it with voice recognition, this makes AI squads, and mini "Natal" Scenes possible, such as Climing the training course that Mendez put the Spartans through. But during combat, you just needed a controller. I think that this could work really well, and would make my theories possible. Not only that, But Chief liked to use hand commands, with Natal, you could actually use the same hand signs, that the chief did.

this is exactly y i dont think NATAL will ever be used in any FPS.
there still just isnt tht FPS "feel" to it.

Here's a solution:
1) Have subtle movements in your movements. For example, moving 30 degrees left makes your character turn continuously until you turn back facing the t.v. Problem solved, got another?

And how do you know natal doesn't have an FPS "feel" to it? Have you played it? It's like saying you hate vegetables because they look gross.

I do. I see Natal being used primarily for casual games, like a lot of those found on Arcade, as well as some other innovative ones designed to use it. If MS is pushing Bungie to incorporate motion control in any way, it'll just be minimal stuff. Reload by flicking the controller or something.

  • 06.16.2009 5:13 PM PDT

Halo: Reach is a First Person Shooter, not a Project Natal- enabled game.

It wont be used. Natal is still on a developing state. They have been working on this game for some time (no, just because they announced it on E3 doesnt mean that they just started recently) my guess would be that they started this at the same time Halo 3 ended as a main project while ODST was running as the side project. As it has been said, Bungie is making this and not Microsoft and even though Microsoft owns the franchise they know that Bungie knows what its doing. I can see some other Halo game in the future being made with this but Reach? No, its too soon to jump on the failboat when its hasnt been fully built.

As for the game being about the Spartan program? I doubt it. Seems to me that the game will focus on when Reach is invaded. Chances are that we will get a cut-scene so that the people who haven't read the novels know what the hell is happening but other than that they wont head so far back in the past as to make you train as a 6y/old.

Btw, you're the idiot, its spelled Private Caboose, not Privet.
