While I am sure more Firefight maps will be in Halo 3: ODST, I think most of Halo 3's maps could work. Not in the traditional sense we are used to, but in a new way.

Lets take large maps like Valhalla, Sandtrap, and Avalanche. The total area you have to play on is large. Instead of being confined to a singe area, you should have free range of the entire map. You may start at a single base, but you don't have to stay there. I'll use Sandtrap as an example. The waves might start out bearable from the main structure, but in time Phantoms might start to drop more infantry, Wraiths, and Banshees could strike. The UNSC will also drop weapons for you and maybe even give you a Scorpion, Warthog, or Mongooses.

Now lets hit medium sized maps. These include maps like Standoff and High Ground. I might be best to use the bases as cover, but you can still roam around. The same Covenant spawning behavior would apply with Phantoms, Wraiths, and Banshees along with infantry.

Smaller maps will round out the majority. While vehicles may be scarce, expect Phantom drops and increased enemy units. What would be special about these maps though is that some would be "special". How? Take Guardian. It seems like this is the home planet of the Drones. Perhaps it could have Drone swarms. Cold Storage could be primarily Flood forms. The possibilities could be endless.
