The first mission in Halo 3 "Arrival" (Not really a mission it's an intro) how come Cortana says she got to choose the Spartan if only one survives and if the others did survive then why didn't Cortana choose all of them?

Why the hell are you looking at this? Get out.

And no group invites, you jerk. I'm not interested.

Because you have not read the books.

Wrong forum
Because she could only pick one and she chose Cheif

Cortana picked Chief because he was lucky. She chose before all the other spartans died. Technically, Chief isn't the only spartan left either. There are others still alive.

Do NOT send me Recruitment Letters, doing so will get you blocked faster than you can say "Huh?"

Cortana choose John, because Hasely had a special interest in him. This peaked Cortans interest in him, likely influenced her choice. Plus, she can't be in 40 something spartans at once.

Because she couldn't be in multiple people's heads at once...
And it never said she got to pick the one if only one survived, she picked John because of a personal liking to him among other reasons.

First of all wrong forum, but I might as well answer your question anyway.

The opening speech is a reference to the events that take place in the novel, Halo:Fall of Reach. It references two parts. The first part being Dr. Halsey's selection of John during the phase of the Spartan II program when they were selecting potentials. Halsey chose John in part due to his "luck" in determining the outcome of a coin toss. The second part of the opening speech references Cortana's own liking to selecting John prior to the Spartans' special mission to capture a prophet. She had the choice to select the ship, captain, and spartan that would carry her around and she selected John based on his attributes.

Why Hello There ;D

Same reason they call him Master Cheif.

1. because Hasely had a special interest in him. This peaked Cortans interest in him, likely influenced her choice.
2. Plus, she can't be in 40 something spartans at once.

1. Cortana was based off of Dr. Halsey's brain patterns or something like that (I need to read the books again, it's been a while.) So, since she liked John, Cortana did as well.
2. Actually since she is a "smart" AI, technically, she could. In Contact Harvest, Mack ran systems on an entire planet.

Cortana also chose John based on his luck at guessing heads or tails in a coin flip test.

And Bloodikill, Master Cheif is a nickname because of his rank. His is a Master Cheif Petty Officer.
