Don't confuse me with anyone normal.

I haven't read the books so I don't know if the answer is in there somewhere...

When 343 says that the ring had been fired once.

Does anyone know about when it was fired... like if it had to do with the prophets or the flood or the humans that built the ark and rings...

maybe just a crash course of what happened.

Keep It Clean!

Nice that someone still plays Combat Evolved :D
Answer: The ring, or rings, to be exact, were fired approx. 100 000 years ago by the Forerunners, who made the rings, the Ark and much more. They fired the rings because the Flood was getting too great to fight against, so they decided to do the ultimate, thus killing every sentient being in the whole galaxy, leaving the Flood without food.
Hope this answers some, if not all, of your questions :)
I recommend playing the game through a couple of times so you get really into the story and the depth of it.

EDIT: All of the rings were not fired, only Installation 04 (the Halo you are on) if I remember correctly.

I play the story line from time to time... I love it and it brings back fond memories...

as for your answer, thx! I was wondering if it had to do with the covenent at all or if they recently discovered the rings...

I wonder what the covenent were like before they hated the humans... Why do they hate the humans??

The only reason they are in war against the humans is:
The Covenants "relic-scanner" showed humans as relics, because they were the decendants of the Forerunners. The Prophets didn't like it and they started the war.. :D

I think it's silly that they want to kill the humans off, but they need the humans to "begin they're great journey"

I bet that ticks 'em off even more lol

Fate loves the fearless.

Actually, if I may interject my awesome geek powers here and compound upon what you have said, the War started because of more political reasons in the Covenant hierarchy.

In Contact Harvest, the Prophets (or rather, the San' Shyuum who were scheming to become Prophets) saw that the humans were being deemed Forerunner, by the relic-scanner. The whole binding glue of the Covenant, the conglomerate of species, the keystone keeping them together and not warring is the promise of the Great Journey; that if they remain faithful and subservient, they will ALL be guaranteed to "walk the blessed path", as is evident that ALL Forerunner (they believe) also took the Great Journey when the Halo rings were activated.

The fact that humans are irrefutable proof that not ALL Forerunner took the Great Journey, the entire founding beliefs of the Covenant would be undermined, and thus fall apart and it would be chaos and death, but more importantly, the San'Shyuum would no longer hold power.

So what do they do?

The 3 Prophets-to-be scheme and maneuver their way to power and begin a War with their prophetic Gods.

That is, IIRC. And I like to think that I do.

EDIT: Oh, and as for your original question, the story of the Mythic "First Firing" is what is told in the Terminals of Halo 3. I'm still trying to figure those out, though. Mkay. Hoped this helped. =)

I know 343 Guilty Spark says the time between visits by sentient beings, but I can't remember which game, or what the time was....

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

Not to mention that if the rest of the Covenant were to discover the signifigance of the humans it would essentially render their belief system useless. Not so much that they would be shaken by the fact that the Forerunners had descendants, but that they were the rightfull inheriters of the Forerunner legacy, not the members of the Covenant as was preached.

As it is with many religions in history, when something threatens the belief system, genocide seems to be the go-to option.

Suck it Red!

The three leading prophets of the Covenant heard a prophecy from a forerunner relic saying that Humans are the Forerunner's descendants and that Covenant should not be changing Forerunner technology. The prophets realized that if the rest of the Covenant learned this then it would destroy the Covenant because it would prove that the values the Covenant was founded on were fake. Or something like that.

Essentially, everything with a large enough biomass to sustain the Flood.

  • 06.22.2009 12:56 PM PDT

the forerunners fired it so the flood wouldn't take them over and ultimately take over the galaxy.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

The Forerunner fired the Rings before.
