Does anyone know what Winter Contingency is? I was just watching the trailer, and I heard someone say:
It's them. Winter Contingency has been declared.

Does anyone know what it is?

it doese'nt look nextgen , looks good but not nextgen
If by next-gen you mean crappy, dark and colorless, I agree. It doesnt look next-gen at all.

Seems to be some kind of plan that would be set in motion once the Covenant attacked.

I kinda thought it was more of an evacuation plan, get the people out, leave the Marines there to fight, take the Marines away, blow up the Planet. I know that doesn't make sence(pardon my spelling), but to me, that explains the explosions.

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

My understanding is that Winter Contingency is a "worst case" command. Basically stating that it's hit that fan and there needs to be a plantary mobilization, with possible commands to secure high-profile personelle and equipment. Specifically in the case of Reach, as it housed a pretty serious UNSC research facility.

I think it means that an overwhelming invading force is unavoidable and key strategic points get nuked to prevent them falling into enemy hands.

yea, and along with that it probably includes evacuation codes and activates different systems than normal. For example, all armories are probably active, dormant ships may become available for use in a last case scenario, and nuclear stockpiles may be opened.

It might also include the commands for all available units in the surrounding systems to immediately jump to Reach

EDIT:

Wow i can't believe this topic is still alive after four days on this forum.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME GROUP INVITATIONS

The Halo REACH Script (post thoughts in thread)

Writing Lead of Whisper Studios. Check out Heron!

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

Sounds a lot like Captain Keyes, doesn't it? Maybe he's talking about the Spartans prepping to go to Reach to defend the orbital generators (would explain the succeeding "This is Sierra-320, prepped for combat insertion" line)

It does sound close to the same voice actor, but not quite the voice used for Keyes. Over the weekned I played through CE again (after reading The Fall of Reach, again) and there is a slight difference in the recorded voice. It could very well be him though, which would be an interesting inclusion. Not to mention that it would mean that there has been a "Keyes" in every main Halo game.

Remember the trailer:

FLEETCOM: "Winter Contingency is a go."
Marine: "Ouch! Stop shooting at us. We're trying to read the Sunday comics."
FLEETCOM: "Tough luck. The planet's being overrun."

That was the conversation to the best of my recollection. Obivously "Winter Contingency" means you leave nothing behind for the enemy.

Thats what google came up with. It seems to be some sort of failsafe plan....

A Contingency plan is a fail-safe/Worst-case scenario plan the code name "winter" is purely coincidence.

Gracias...so the UNSC was slightly prepaired for this.....

Does being glassed mean-

[A] Blown to smiterenes

[B] Made Flattened???

I have no idea what it means in a halo sense....

shot with plasma till the surface of the planet resembles glass

to the same extent the United States is prepared for nuclear war . . .

They don't think its going to happen tomorrow but they don't know if/when so they must be prepared.

Every man is the architect of his own fortune.

I think that it means an emergency withdrawal plan, if you think about Dunkirk in 1940 the british had to withdraw out of france from the ever inclosing german army. The british destroyed everything they couldent take with them, but this was called Operation Dynamo. If that has any corralation i do not know. Back to halo, i think spartan troops are sent to rescue the remaining spartans on the ground, while training of the second and third wave possible.
these are just ideas :)x
