There seems to be two main theories circulating about Reach's storyline.
1. Events will follow the experiences of the SPARTANS left on Reach before Halo 1. No curveballs.
2. The chief has, through some effect of the portal at the end of H3, time travelled back to Reach and must now save his Spartan friends.
Let's set things right for a second.
There is absolutely NO WAY that scenario 2 will occur. In fact, I strongly doubt that our beloved MC will even make an appearence in the game (except, maybe, at the end when they get rescued) . This would simply screw up the timeline of the Halo universe way too much. It is far more likely that we will follow the original team of Reach survivors as they fight their way out of there. I know that there is a lot of so-called "evidence" that the chief has time-travelled (planets look similar, etc.), and it is not unfathomable that the effects of the portal in combination with the Ark's activation could cause a breach in the time-space continuum, but I strongly believe that this is simply not the case.
Regardless of what I or anyone else thinks, the fact is we don't know ANYTHING about Halo: Reach right now, and it is far too early to dream up misled theories regarding the storyline. Whatever Bungie has in store for us, it will certainly be enjoyable and unexpected. There is no way that we will be able to predict all of the events in Reach (unless, of course, they refuse to deviate at all from the book). We never saw the Flood coming in H1, we never saw the arbiter or human/elite alliance coming in H2, and we didn't see the lost-in-space ending coming in H3. Why should we expect anything different from Reach (or, off topic, from ODST)? Until Bungie releases more information, we simply cannot make any educated guesses as to Reach's story.
So just be patient. All will be revealed in time...
