I propose a new mode of gameplay beyond the existing modes of Matchmaking, Custom, Forge and Theater.

Machinima Mode

Machinima mode would use the motion capture abilities of Natal to capture a player's movements and animate the characters on screen in real-time.

With Machinima mode you could import all the game models because there would be no concern for matchmaking balance since there's no competitive aspect. It exists solely to capture animation for Machinima and other purposes. This means you could animate Elites, Marines, ODST, Spartans...whatever characters are featured in the campaign.

Machinima mode would use defined gestures to allow you to do things like holster weapons, lay prone or perform any other complex movements Bungie can think of.

Machinima sessions would be captured the same as other game modes, allowing you to replay in Theater mode to manipulate camera angles and create clips. Those clips could then be rendered to video to make Machinima available to the masses.

Adding this feature would make Halo: Reach the premier tool for Machinima creation. It would be a quantum leap beyond anything done previously in this area.

I'm not proposing the use of Natal for character movement in matchmaking or any other gameplay mode. Machinima mode would simply replace the canned animations with the motion capture skeleton utilized by Natal. The use of Natal would also be optional, allowing players to use their controllers to moves characters in a normal manner if the game detects that Natal is not present on the system.

An side feature of Machinima mode would be that it would become a place for clans, groups or friends to gather simple for conversation within a dynamic environment. The virtual space where you can relax and do whatever inspires you.

Please, give me your opinions.

that would be a good idea and everyone could start without a weapon with your hands by your sides it would be great for machinima mode

Don't think natal will be out by the time that Halo Reach could incorporate such a feature. But do we really need a machine to capture head bobbles when good old joysticks have worked out fine in the past? :)

I do not appreciate B.Net Group solicitation. If you ignore this and send me an invitation anyway, I will block communications with you.

While this would be an awesome idea, to be completely honest, I don't think it would make sense to apply such a thing to individual games. It would make more sense to either have this as a Natal Application, or perhaps even its own Natal video game. That way, models from many different MGS franchises could be utilized, rather than simply Halo. Halo is hardly the main mode of XBOX machinima anymore.

Its not 'head bobbles".

Natal identifies and tracks 48 seperate joints in the body. It's even capable of tracking individual finger movements and the angle of your hands, although it doesn't sound like they'll be going for that in the final product.

Natal tracks your joints in the form of a wire "skeleton". Anyone who's familiar with animating characters will be familiar with this skeleton. It's identical with the way tradional Mo-Cap works for movie animation. Microsoft demonstrated how Natal could be used to animate an Avatar in real team during the Natal demo.

What I'm talking about is using this character animation in a single gameplay mode and adding other simple animations for actions like weapon holstering. Those animations would be triggered by gestures the game would be programmed to recognize.

So, walking around your living room would transfer to walking around in the game.
How could this not be the greatest thing in the world for Machinima artists? Ans so easy to do that MS whipped it out in short order for the E3 demonstration.

I don't do Machinima but this sounds interesting. It might not be too hard for Bungie to do.

Basically the same exact thing I was hoping to see in Reach. Glad to see someone actually posts it though.

Without me, it's just "Aweso".

Great Idea!

I am flatterd that you botherd to look at my signature.

here is another way to do it.. in machnima mode you can take control of a charicter and you can interact with objects.. like pick up a small crate and thow it.

or even use natal to scan in special objects.. like maybe the bad ass elite needs his teddy bear too... lol
