There are only two ways MC could have time traveled. First, it is proven that going the speed of light, or faster, will make time slow down. This can could possibly happen in Slipspace, but it only works for future, not past, so this can not work. The second way he could of time traveled is by some how using the crystal found on Reach. The crystal was "destroyed" and the only remain fragments of it were in the possession of the Covenant. MC did not have the crystal so this could not work either. What can we conclude from this? NO TIME TRAVEL. I am re reading Fall of Reach and they do somewhat explain how Slipspace works. Unfortunately the Slipspace technology used by the UNSC does not warp time.
Here's what happen with the portal at the end of Halo 3. MC is at one end of the ship, Arby is at the other end. The portal was made by the Forerunners who were even more advanced then the cov. The portal uses slip space but much faster so it is more like one of those tunnel tubes at a play ground, it is very short. The ship goes through the portal, half of the ship is all ready out of the portal but MCs half is not. The portal collapses which kills the portal so MC exits Slipspace somewhere between earth and the Ark.
I believe everyone is over thinking this game. I would not mind if the the game is about how MC and the other Spartans come to be and you have to play through to the battle of Reach. The name of the game is Halo: Reach, not Halo: Fall of Reach. I think it would be very fun to play the rebel mission were John, Kelly, Linda, Sam, and Fred kidnap the guy in the asteroid. Obviously it's those five in the banner.
Remember, this is just my opinion.
