The Fall of Reach is the first novel to be published, and deals with the earliest chronological events with the possible exception of Contact Harvest. I haven't finished CH yet, but it may or may not have information prior to 2517.

First written - The Fall of Reach. It came out a month before Halo 1.

First chronologically - Contact Harvest. It takes place in 2524, about 28 years before Halo 1, 2 and 3.

While the main events of Reach take place well after Contact Harvest, the spartan's had graduated around the time Contact Harvest is centered, while a good portion of Reach takes place during their training.

So in short, Reach is first chronologically and publishwise.

OKay, if you want to fully understand the story, do the following.

PLay through Halo CE
Read the Fall of Reach.
Read the Flood.
Read First Strike.
PLay Through Halo 2.
Read Ghost's of Onyx.
PLay Through Halo 3.
Read Contact Harvest.
Read The Cole Protocol.

While it is not in chronological order, each book is built off the canon of the books and games that came before it, so you will feel something is missing when something important is in a book that is chronologically before another, but was added later because the other book was written first.

Is it really? I got the audio book, but couldn't stand the narrator after five minutes and was planning on getting myself a physical copy.

In my opinion yes.

SOme people disagree, but it was one of the most boring books I have ever read. Boring story, no twists or thouhgt behind it, it's like the characters are just running themselves through their paces. No emotion, no action, overall just boring.

If by next-gen you mean crappy, dark and colorless, I agree. It doesnt look next-gen at all.

I found Cole Protocol to be fast paced and even though it lacked the emotion it didnt bore the hell out of me like Contact Harvest did. Its the only book that took me more than a month to finish, the others took me 2 days at most.

ok yah so the answer to your initial question: read Fall of Reach. It is first in the chronological order. It explains A LOT going into the video games. In fact, it basically explains how it all began for humanity short of how the covenant really met them. If you want that, then read Contact Harvest.

well lets just put it this way

flood-read 3 times
FOR-read about 50 times in the last 5 years
1st strike read about the same as FOR
GOO read about 25 times in last 2.5 years
harvest read twice-got boring
COle-read once started to read it again but it seemed either to early 2 reread it or it was so boring- i just wnated to read the grey team parts but there were too many covy crap tackular parts

so to sum it all up, yes it is a very -blam!- book, and even though i pretty much memerized all of them it still feels new

kinda of funny-for the offical writer of halo, well one of them staten book kinda sucked, while it did have the history of the allmighty johnson it still wasn't as good as nylund

which says alot,

Of the books out, Nylund's are by far the best ones and most enjoyable to read. Just wish the Forerunner trilogy due out next year would be done by Nylund. Also wish a sequel to Ghosts of Onyx would come out (by Nylund, of course).

I also really really wish F. Paul Wilson would write a Halo novel. His Repairman Jack novels are amazing, and his writing skills with Halo would be awesome, not to mention imagining the Halo characters kicking royal behind in a Repairman Jack-esqe manner.

Dear Bungie: Contact F. Paul Wilson. Beg him to write a Halo novel. if not, I may have to send Rasalom after you.

If you are interested in the Halo universe then read them they tell the back story and fill in the blanks left by the games.

Reading The Fall of Reach is basically reading about the origin, conception, and incarnation of Master Chief, Cortana, Captain Keyes, and basically makes the events in the first couple of levels of Halo: CE make much more sense.
