Subject: Campaign Emphasis in Halo: Reach

Before I throw this rather small wall of text at you, let me say first that I'm not knocking the single-player from the Halo games nor am I saying that Multi-Player is stupid, I'm just stating what I think would be an interesting new element to the Halo franchise and perhaps get people off Bungie's back saying they're a one-trick-pony.

I would really, really like to see Halo: Reach delve way deeper into single player than the previous Halo games. Halo: CE had a great single player, but from there it got progressively worse (see the last two missions of Halo: 2.) To be honest, a really great single player game is a hallmark of of video-gaming in my opinion and the Halo series lacks a Campaign that really just sucks you into it. I don't really know if Bungie could pull this off considering they'll probably stick with the same graphical feel as the other Halo games. The cartoonish and colorful graphical style fit perfectly with the original games, but with this break from the original trilogy I would love to see them try something new, plus it would lend itself nicely into the single-player focused atmosphere.

When I look at great games that stand out in my mind most are very story driven single-player only games. I would hate to see Halo: Reach be only single-player, but perhaps a double disc game with a more story-driven campaign and 30+ Hours of playtime (hopeful, I know) would be a great new facet for Bungie to look into.

I agree, too much focus was put onto MP in H2 and H3. The funny thing is, the MP was better in Halo 1 (gameplay-wise) while most effort went into making campaign.

First off I think Halo3's campaign was very good, remember Halo:CE has TIME on it's side, nostolgia I mean even people who hated Halo2 are liking it because it brings back good memories and such.

Halo:CE was great because it was the ONLY good game at the time on the Xbox. Halo3 has COd4, GOW2, This and That.

Yet I agree 100% that Reach should have a huge huge campaign, I say finish Campaign until it's as good as it gets and THEN work on MP, but w/e I'm not bungie. It's a new game, Reach was an epic story I trust bungie, I just don't trust time and Microsoft.

I disagree... I still play Halo 1's campaign because the story was good, but also because the gameplay was so much more fun than Halo 2's and 3's (H1 is way more fast paced, rewarding, consistent, etc.)

30+ hours of gameplay for halo would be amazing. I wouldn't care as to how many discs it was on, as long as the multiplayer was on one disc.

and how!

I would like to see the campaign have both linear and open world touches.

There should be some parts where you are in the middle of a large scale battle, and you have an objective to complete, but if you really wanted to you could just move around the area and fight covenant for long periods of time.

There should also be parts where you are in a "semi-linear" area, with multiple paths that all lead to the same end zone, but have different pros and cons to each path, such as less enemies but also less cover, or more enemies and more equipment available, etc.

Kind of reminiscent of Mass Effect it seems. I could see that system working with Halo: Reach

Agreed, especially if they can fit Co-Op play into a really epic and great Campaign. Sittin down with a friend for two nights straight just playing Halo would be awesome.

I Heart Halo

I promise you they aren't going to scrap multiplayer. I don't think they are having a campaign beta (you know the one we are getting the code for with ODST). I do agree though that they screwed up the Campaign in Halo 2. I love Multiplayer though.

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

Yup, I too found that hilarious. The MP has suffered since they started simplifying it for newcomers, then they show up and call themselves elite cause they can use a BR for everything or better yet, exploit glitches, this is the face of Halo.

The campaign has always made these games for me, even though I agree that they have gotten progressivly worse in succession. I wouldn't want MP to go away by any stretch of the imagination, but the campaign needs to be given the respect it deserves. With Reach they have a clean slate of sorts, not that they don't need to follow the story of another game.

I'm not suggesting a scrap to multiplayer, just a little more emphasis on Single Player. Muliti Player cannot even come close to the experience you can get from a great singleplayer

I hope it's long. It seems Bungie is taking as much time as it can to work on this game, so hopefully it will be long. Maybe it'll even have a campaign from the Covonent's point of view, but mainly focus on the Spartans. And it's probably a fact that it will be co op. Bungie always puts co op, Im sure they know thats one of the main reasons Halo is so fun. That's what makes it a great party game. Good times. Good times.

When was the last time you ran into an FPS, that wasn't a watered down fps/rpg hybrid, that was 30+ hours long?

I can't think of any off the top of my head, which is my point. Bungie could really do something innovative-ish by making an engrossing FPS campaign.

The reason there aren't any is due to the fact that people notice things more in first person. You have to really put an artistic touch on walls with scratches and water stains. You can't draw out big empty levels like you can with 3rd person games like Zelda. You have to keep textures, level designs, geometry, and set pieces fresh, and the pacing good and encounters good, or else you end up with people complaining about the long trek between checkpoints like in Far Cry 2, and that campaign was 20 hours. A game of that magnitude would require numerous resources and people constantly coming up with fresh scenarios, or it would take years with a low number of people. Not to mention repeats of missions like in Grand Theft Auto.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

I would like to see them make a Halo game that is ONLY multiplayer, AND game that is ONLY campaign, then they could make the most kick-ass experience on both fronts!

I'm not saying it wouldn't be a huge undertaking, but I can dream can't I? Lost Odyssey was 4 Discs, pack in a ton data and split it into a bunch of discs. To be honest, I expect Halo: Reach to be a lot like the other Halos in it's design.

I love halo

I agree, halo ce had a great campaign what made it great was that it was challenging and took more than an afternoon to complete. i have read the halo fall of reach book which has Master chief in it so i expect him in this campaign but what makes a great campaign is how much it challenges you, in halo ce i was challenged and was presented with a scarcity of supplies, ammo was hard to find along with grenades and health packs and power weapons. Halo 3 had a good story campaign but there were power weapons and ammo at every corner along with a joke of an enemy, the brutes in halo 2 posed much more of a threat and should have been in halo 3 but they weren't so missions were quick and easy and there were only 9 missions i hope bungie doesn't make a mistake with their campaign like halo 2 were there were a lot of short missions. Halo reach does have one thing halo 3 doesn't, elites and elites are hard to kill so they may slow you down enough for the campaign to last longer.

Not sure if you really understand my point. ODST will probably be very similar to Halo 3 in the way it is laid out. I'd like to see Reach be more like an interactive movie, with great cut-scenes, a really long campaign, and a lot of cool little eggs along the way
