Ok, the carpet bombing probably isn't it because carpet bombing is a carpet of bombs. I still believe that it is UNSC related.

(I just remembered that in the books the UNSC carpet bombed the area around the generators to what they hoped would clear the Covenant, but that didn't work and it ended up killing marines. I think thats what those explosions are in the trailer because then the marines radio in "There are still men down here" its like they are mad at UNSC for bombing. If it was the cov glassing the planet why would marines be radioing in to UNSC telling them that. Plus if the cov were glassing the planet I think there would be time to radio in because they would be dead by the time they figured out what is going on.)

EDIT: I forgot how they also say "What the hell was that". If the planet was being glassed wouldn't they know it and would be expecting it at any time. That seems more like something you say when someone on your team throws a water balloon at you and not the enemy.

I don't think it is the planet being glassed because in the prologue of Fall of Reach MC watches a planet get glassed and what happens in the trailer is not how a planet is glassed. Its more of as huge shower of plasma bolts then random explosion. But the random explosions could be other bombs, but would be UNSC still.

EDIT:
Adding to this,

The Winter Contingency could be some kind of extreme protocol where they have to sacrifice men to accomplish something. The only problem is it didn't work and marines were killed for nothing. Like in Fall of Reach when the Dr. Halsey takes the Spartans to the planet to get their armor, they encounter the cov and the capt. has to sacrifice the fighter pilots.

It could also be very simple and the cov could be setting off bombs like the one in Halo 2. The one with spikes.

They could also be NOVA bombs. Even though by color and look they seem plasma and cov, the UNSC did know about plasma energy and the basic principals of the cov weapons. They just don't know how they control the plasma after it is fired. Plus a lot of tech was stolen from the cov, such as MC's shields. The very first armor the spartans wore had no shield system until they stole it from the elites.

I second u on that opinion

Same here, as they start right after he says something about "Winter Contingency" that makes me think that winter contingency is the carpet bombings.

It's possible that Brutes took human bombs (like they did in Cuba when Blue Team was fighting while the Chief was on Delta Halo) and used them against us from space.

It's also possible that Winter Contingency is something similar to what the COG did in GoW, in that the UNSC would destroy points of UNSC knowledge before the Covenant reached the surface (can't Cole Protocol an astronomical library without fire).

Or since the man who says the line about Winter Contingency sounds a lot like Keyes, it's possible that Winter Contingency is the Spartans' armament and deploment to the surface to defend the generators.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

It's Covenant.

Carpet bombings do not release mushroom clouds or anything similar to a nuclear explosion.

Cheehwawa, please you should know this aswell as I do, and that is there were no Brutes during the invasion of Reach. The Spartans didn't encounter any Brutes untill OPERATION: First strike.

What I'm saying just makes more sense. That is not how the Covenant glasses a planet.

The first couple are blue-ish, and seem to come from nowhere. Definitely plasma, but not enough for a bombardment.

Do you know what a carpet-bomb is? They are NEVER that large, those explosions were definitely from something larger.

I think this Reach teaser mimicked the Halo 2 trailer, where everyone's screaming, people are in a panic, and the UNSC is just as chaotic as the numerous distress signals.

In the banner above this forum you can see covenant ships glassing the planet...

Are we looking at the same banner? Yeah, the cov definitely glassed the planet I just don't think that is what they are showing in the trailer.

Fred and co. didn't encounter them until then, what about the 17 unnamed Spartans on Reach whose story is still untold? We only know of 5 confirmed KIAs on Reach (Joshua, Malcolm, and 3 from the Pelican drop).

ex. Red Team fought Elites in Halo Wars, but John didn't encounter Elites until Gamma Station.

It must be the Covenant and not the UNSC cause they keep repeting (three times to be accurate) "I need you in that fight Nova 1". Why would they need more Marines to hold their lines if their bombarding themselfs?, it must be the Covenant

We should know better, because we are better.

NOVA theory impossible because NOVAs are planet destroying bombs.
