Ok here this source from Halopedia:

"The majority of the wounded and healthy Spartans were formed into Team Beta. Their job was to defend the generators at all costs. To compromise this mission meant the fall of Reach. Not much is known about what Team Beta did during the battle, but they ultimately lost the battle. Most of the generators were destroyed, but not due to the Spartans incompetence, but rather from overwhelming forces. These Covenant attacks in mass easily overran the few Spartan defenders, allowing the Covenant to destroy the generators the Spartans were protecting. This dismal failure and complete waste of lives was likely due to inadequate time to set up defensive emplacements, and/or inadequate time to develop an ideal strategy by Fred.

Team Beta fell quickly. They managed to get a transmission to Frederic-104 and the Pillar of Autumn, telling them to stay away from the planet because most of the generators had been destroyed, but in a futile attempt, they would attempt to protect the several remaining generators. "

This is the largest splinter of the Red Team, a lot of healthy and wounded Spartans formed this team, it might the Halo:Reach focus on 5 of this unknown Spartans that were left behind.

I'm going to keep this short and simple. If you don't agree with me, whatever. But this makes more sense that what others have been sugesting

Bungie has given us a total of 5 books, and 4 games worth of stories in the halo universe. One of those books was Halo: the Fall of Reach (tFoR). It had a full story (prequel) to Halo 1. If bungie were to base this entire game off of tFoR, would there be any new stories to tell or mysteries to solve?

No.

That immediately takes that option out of the picture. If bungie wants to sell a game and make it interesting to play, they wouldn't use a storyline that has already been explored, they'll create something new for gamers to reveal as the story progresses.

So please stop jumping to the conclusion that because Reach is in the title of this game, the storyline will follow that of tFoR.

It takes place on the same planet at the same time. Just not the same people. And don't say they can't add to the storyline. Bungie can do whatever they want, Its their world, we just like it.

It has to follow the plotline of the first book, but both characters you play die, so you don't get to see Dr. Halsey or the crystal that distorts slipspace she and a few other Spartans escaped with.
