Subject: Why do people want to add this in?

All over the ODST forum, every single topic about the price eventually comes to include:
-The Reach Beta
-Unlocking Recon
-The Johnson ODST Skin

Why do people feel the need to put these up there with ODST, as if it makes the price more reasonable?
-People weren't doing this with Crackdown with the Halo 3 Beta, and the Beta isn't something that they want to give to us because Bungie is soooooo nice. It is for testing the multiplayer only, and if they didn't need to test it they sure as hell wouldn't be letting us look early. They need it so we are the guinea pigs for their new game.
-We should have already have Recon since it was advertised way before Halo 3 even came out, and Bungie already has their own armor.
-People weren't doing this with Gears of War 2 or Halo Wars with the Golden Lancer and Flame Warthog and Honor Guard Wraith.

This isn't a thread about the price, I'm just asking a simple question as why people that want to justify the $60 mark up by adding in these 3 things into the overall price figure. Like it somehow justifies the game's overall price.

Because it makes them feel better about paying $60 for a game worth $30-$40.

  • 06.19.2009 10:31 AM PDT

Because without the ODST Disc, you can't unlock those =)

I know, it was more of a rhetorical question, but I really am curious as to why people think this really justifies their purchase. Like they were on the fence before the Reach Beta was announced, and now hot damn! This was the one thing that pushed them to the buyers side.

You mean like Call of Duty? Seriously, people are saying "OMG! I don't want to buy this because it's sixty dollars" yet do for a CoD game that has the same length campaign as the previous installiment and the same multiplayer as the previous installiment.

I don't know, I haven't bought a CoD game in years. I think the last CoD game a played was CoD2.

I don't want to talk about anything else besides the 3 things aforementioned. I just don' t want to turn this into a flame war. Their are many threads where you can give your reasoning for not buying the game there.

Chapter

Narwhallace Smithington: Gone, but not forgotten. Never approve of anything lil guy. <3
Furious George: The new -blam!-

I don't think any of those things should be used in justifying the price. In this thread I made some posts about why I think the game is reasonably priced.

Now, to address some of the points you made:

While Bungie is definitely using us as test subjects to test their multiplayer, I think it's partially out of an act of kindness as well. They know we want to sink our teeth into anything they give us. What better way to kill two birds with one stone, eh?

I don't think Recon armor was advertised as something you'd get in Halo 3. I believe pictures of it leaked and it was used in artwork, but Bungie never up and said "you'll get every single armor permutation". If I recall correctly, Frankie said (in a podcast a long time ago) something along the lines of..."you'll have to do certain awesome things to get different armor". While he could have meant harder achievements = more armor, it's still an accurate statement.

People will justify their purchases and many decisions they make however they want, that's something I really can't discuss. :\

Your wasting you're time you could be doing something else besides reading my signature...

People do this in hopes of justifying the fact with the public that they refuse to pay the price of a great game.

A somewhat large group of these people (not all) I believe, think that if they whine enough over something that will not change, it might be noticed by the producers...and pity might be taken, which is not the case...Ever...

Those can't really be adding in to the overall price though because their worthless, not priceless.

They actually did do this all over the Halo Wars forums about the flame warthog. And I also remember seeing a lot of threads over here in the Halo 3 forum.

The offering of the Beta is really cool, but you do have to look at the bigger picture, and that the only reason they are doing it is so they can get some good tests in. Us being happy is only a nice side product of the Beta being public.
Well Bungie was being dicks about Recon Armor. Plain and simple, there is no way to avoid it. First they wouldn't tell us anything about it, then we started to find out what is was on our own, the BLAM! Only Bungie employees can have it, but wait now you, you and you can have it. But only under ridiculous circumstances that we just made up right now.

Yea, pity is never taken. Unless the sales are so horrible the game has to have a serious face lift. And even then I can't name one instance where that happened.

Really, that made people want to buy it more? Even though they knew it did nothing. I can see preordering since it isn't anything extra, but $20 more for the Wraith. That's a awful, stupid reason for getting the SE of Halo Wars.

Or something more likely is that they need a made up justification to buy the game, instead of by it's own merit.

I could not have said it better my friend.

True Underdog you have some good points, but I feel that you have missed an important thing. Is the game itself worth 60$?

Well you said that the open world campaign and Firefight have plenty of replay value. Not taking the fact that you haven't played the game into consideration, I'm going to disagree with that one. I don't think that an open world game will lure in the current halo population. The current halo 3 gamers want a challenge. Since the game is based on the same engine, the characters have the same AI. For example, the brutes are still going to rampage when they lose their armor, and they are going to jump from side to side when confronted. Yes, we do have less health and we're more vulnerable, but taking out the AI isn't going to change. How you take your approach is what's going to change, which isn't much.

I predict that most current halo 3 gamers aren't going to be attracted by this open world campaign for reply value. They want to play smart people (other gamers) for a challenge. They also want ranks, not some meta game that gives you points for every kill you take.

I'm trying to not turn this into a thread about the price, which it seems like you are very well doing.

Please stick to the three points I listed:
Unlocking Recon
Halo Reach Beta
Unlocking Johnson
