SO I'm sure someone has already proposed this theory, but I'm lazy. Go ahead ad start flamming now, I really don't care.
My theory-- HALO: Reach is a class-based fps such as Team Fortress 2, or possibly more along the lines of Call of Duty.
My evidence-- Bungie has been working on this with a huge team for a long time, around three or four years come launch. Between the fact that a public beta is being launched and overwhelming evidence that they're using a new engine, as well as the fact that employees (microsoft or bungie, I forget which) claim that the game will be mostly multiplayer oriented, it all points this way.
Now I understand that there are other theories that are well supported. However, Bungie has stated several times that there will be no Halo 4. I know that they have changed their minds before, but I still say that this rules the planet seen in the Legendary ending as artistic value or merely a teaser that the master cheif doesn't just die in space, you know, for the fans. I will admit that the two do seem very similar, but the time period of the trailer for Reach lend to be before the Halo incident. Another time period issue is that though the Master Cheif seems to be floating to Reach, the other spartans claimed to be in the banner are millions of lightyears away in sheild world (not like HALO WARS) in Onyx. I know that slipspace is freaky and so are the Forreners, but the connectivity is difficult to create.
As far as the spartans in the banner go, they could be anybody. Practically all of the spartans were sent on the mission to the surface of Reach. The Master Cheif was not. Now that's not to say he won't be in the game, since Bungie refuses to take a stand on the matter, in fact suspiciously acts as though he might, I bet he'll only make an appearance in a cutscene or maybe one level. Or maybe it does a flashback thing similar to ODST upon the Cheif's landing. I'm just saying it's unlikely.
But overall: Bungie does not always tease in the same direction as they plan to deliver-- Who remembers the "Believe" ad campaign? I don't recall running through New Mombosa with thousands of marines and etting captured by a cheiftan anywhere in Halo 3, so:
MY GUESS IS AS GOOD AS YOURS
