Subject: Huge Flaw in Time Travel Theories

I understand a lot of people are convinced that the planet in the Halo: Reach trailer is the same planet at the end of Halo 3. But if the Forerunners invented time-travel technology, *why didn't they use it to win the war against the Flood*? They could've used it to stop Mendicant Bias before it betrayed them to the Gravemind (according to the Halo 3 terminals), escape to a time without the Flood, or done lots of stuff to win the war.

You're not well versed in sci-fi.
There are 2 major types of time travel.

1 is the theory that you can go back and time and change the past, thereby affecting the future.

2 is the theory that you can go back into the past, but instead of changing the future you're essentially creating another realm in space-time.
I think most theories about MC fall in the 2nd.

So answering your question, they could have, but that doesn't affect their space-time dimension.

And also, who says the forerunner had to invent this? Basic sci-fi, or hell, science principles. When you use wormholes to travel, which yes, is theoretically real- essentially you "squeeze" space in order to travel between point a and b more rapidly, you could either create them or perhaps a portal into another dimension, not necessarily to a particular time. Scientists aren't really sure which it'd be, but for the purpose of sci-fi, you could say it'd be either or both.

-- I would say that controlled time travel usually goes with past affecting future, while wandering into a worm-hole typically is the spin-off dimension.

Golf Wang. Brony.

It's going to be like Star Trek.

The forerunners didn't create time travel, it's the adverse effect of what happens when you go through a portal while it is closing.

nubba dub scrub in a tub

The forunner tried that. but when they were travelling on the time travel highway they crashed into hiro nakamura which caused massive traffic delays and they couldnt make it back in time, in time

Time travel doesnt work that way. You go into the past and as soon as you change something, you start a new alternate universe. You cannot return to your own universe; your actions only effect the parallel universe. So if some Forerunner went back to change the future, our time (Haloverse) would be unaffected.

Again, all depends on the fiction.

If we want to get really crazy with it here, we could say that the forerunner are still alive, but relocated to another tie, and essentially are guiding master chief in order to, well, do stuff. They opened the portal because he has to help out to do something at reach in order to help out himself?

I dunno, but the whole flood twist in the covenant (not necessarily a plot twist, but sort of a realization of what they were) sort of would fit into this. I don't think it to be the case though.

Maybe the crystal is some sort of key to another dimension? Wonder how... maybe it creates extremely high false gravity, through the mysterious type of radiation, which bends space and connects the two universes or something. The closer to the crystal, the more you can be influenced by the Forerunner in the alternate dimension.

Or maybe not.

The Forum Ninjas are asleep.

Technically even if it were possible you could could change nothing because those changes would have factored into the events that caused what you were trying to change.
