Subject: Destructible Enviroments - What do you think?

Poll: Would you like to see destructible enviroments in Halo: Reach?  [closed]
Yes, I would like to see destructible enviroments:  75%

No, I do not want to see destructible enviroments:  8%

Only in Custom Games, Forge and Campaign:  17%

No, destructible environments in Halo: Reach has not been confirmed. This is just a rumor, speculation and suggestion thread. Bungie listens to their community so I took it upon myself to make a thread. Whether Bungie listens to the idea or not is totally up to them. I would have posted this in the Halo: Reach Multiplayer Wants and Ideas Thread located here but this idea includes Multiplayer, Campaign and Forge. Now onto the subject;

In many games, destructible environments have succeeded. For instance, games like Red Faction: Guerrilla and Battlefield: Bad Company. (No, I'm not comparing Halo to any of these games so don't flame or shun me) I'm not even asking for a fully destructible environment, some simple structures, walls or obstacles that can be destroyed or shot through (almost like a larger scale version of pallets in Halo 3 or Blowupable Covers in Halo 3:ODST) would suffice.

The problem is where would this fit best and on what kind of scale? Would you like it where you can shoot through walls like in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or destroy walls and structures completely like in Red Faction: Guerrilla or would you not like to see destructible environments at all?

Think about it, you're playing Capture the Flag, you take the Rocket Launcher, blow up a wall, grab a vehicle and you're ready to go. Only to find out there's a guy on the opposing team waiting on another side of a destructible wall.

Besides, Reach is already getting blown the -blam!- up so why not? :-)

*Would you like to see it in Multiplayer (and where)?
*Would you like to see it in Campaign?
*Do you think destructible environments are fun?
Please vote, post, flame, and support.

It depends on if the destruction is "just for luls" or if it is presented in a balanced and well thought out manner. I certainetly don't want to have it so that my enemy can level my entire base just from firepower, nor do I want to see such a feature limited only to a few crates if it is implemented. I can live without a feature, but if they find a use for it, then by all means, include it.

Thank you sir, that was an epic rendition of this topic.

and how!

To a certain extent. I don't want players to be able to level entire buildings, but if you fire at a wooden crate, armor piercing rounds will easily be able to penetrate it.

Forge objects should also have the option to turn their "destructibility" on or off.

EDIT: I thought this would be another good reference.

In Gears of War 2, certain pieces of cover will take damage when hit with lots of rounds or explosives, making anyone taking cover there slightly more exposed, but the piece of cover isn't entirely destroyed.

Exactly. I am also not entirely onboard with destructible enviroments in Halo. Halo just doesn't feel like a game that includes that i.e. Red Faction Guerrila whatever.

I agree with you. I should clarify, obstacles should be destructible, but not whole bases.

Sounds great. Destructible environments always add a sense of realism in games, I think.

I like to see something like in Gears of War 2. The maps can be damaged but its only visual, wall don't get blown open its just surface damage for looks. I also want to see gore like in Gears of War 2, plasma scorched corpses anyone?

My biggest hope is that we can at least shoot through walls. I mean we are 500 years in the future, if guns today can shoot through walls, why can't guns in the future shoot through walls too?

I hope that if this feature is included, it is well thought out and balanced. It has a lot of potential:

A minor building is hit by a rocket, there should be a whole in the wall. Glass should also break as well.

If a building is leveled, it could be a good thing because it could open up new pathways, and add more cover, etc.

I personally do not think that a teams base should be competely destructible, but certianly holes should be able to be blown through, and also other, smaller buildings.

Basically, yes, but think it out and balance it.

If Bungie proceeds with the idea, of course it will be balanced.

I love interactive enviroments. Bad Company and Black were visually pleasing. I would love it if Bungie took a similar approach.

Don't really care.

Currently the gameplay dynamics in Halo games don't really allow for destructable environments. If Bungie decides it's an important enough a feature to include in the design of their next game then I'm sure they'll balance gameplay around it.

Bottom line; destructable environments are a game changer. It doesn't make gameplay better it just makes gameplay different. I can take it or leave it.

If a game is constantly changing, it could sway either way, don't you think? I mean, if it changes too drastically, you won't like it but if it changes slightly where it makes it more strategic or easier to reach an objective, it could make it better. So you sir, have flawed logic, sorry.

There are no flaws in my logic.

Destructable environments fundamentally change gameplay. It's not like adding visible battle damage to armor, it profoundly changes the nature of the game.

Having destructable environments does not improve a game, it just makes it play differently. There are excellent games with destructable environments and there are excellent games without this feature. Having destructable environments has never turned a lousy game into a good game and not having it has never ruined any game.

It's just a feature.

If Bungie decides to incorporate destructable environments it would be a major departure from the gameplay dynamic they have established in their games so far. This is not saying that it would be a bad thing or that they won't do it.

My point is that it doesn't matter to me either way.
So, there are no flaws in my logic, you just disagree with my opinion.

Yeah it wound be a good leason for all of those little noobs who sit corners and pwn.

Also if your in a vehicle and your planning on killing the person and they run into a base u can ram the side and kill them from the debris from the wall

I'll clarify, it can make it better. Just like it can put a damper in it. I was saying your logic was flawed when you said it doesn't make the game better, like it's a fact. I apologize for being so indirect.

Sure it would be fun blowing down a wall, but if u blew down every wall down on the map it would take away from the game.

I`m just saying, just a few chunks should be taken from the wall, or just a chunk sizable to crouch through.

I could swing either way with this idea

destructible environments would be incredibly helpful during a custom or matchmaking game, but if every thing on the map was destructble, the map would look like it was nuked. the destuctability of a structure should be based on the caliber of the weapon, like you shouldn't be able to level a building by unloading on it with an assault rifle. a single shot from a rocket launcher shouldn't do it either, but should take a resonably sized chunk out of whatever your shooting at, depending on the size. all in all I think its a good idea.
