Assuming we'll be seeing them again, do you think they'll be wieldable? As some of you know, the energy sword would destroy itself when it's user was killed in Halo:CE. With this being a prequel, will the same thing happen in Reach?

Also, what about dual wielding swords. I know it's a touchy subject at best when it comes to gameplay and it's unlikely that it will even be considered in the development of Reach, but do you think it can be done?

What are your thoughts?

I doubt that they will revert back to Halo: CE gameplay just because of the time line. I would hope that they still allow the ENergy Sword to be weildable otherwise a large portion of the Halo commmunity would be upset.

NICE!!

sure, I hope so. This is the only thing that is not done yet and it must be added, this would be the new thing that this Halo game can show, because every Halo game had something new until now...

IM A LEGIT 16

I doubt they'd do the same thing as in Halo: CE, since that rules out any old melee weapons.
I don't see why they wouldn't put it in.

Dual wielded swords? Sure, if it wasn't wieldable by players. Maybe a boss could use them, like the Arbiter from Halo Wars. To put it in as a weapon for players, they would need to redesign the sword completely.

Thank you sir, that was an epic rendition of this topic.

and how!

If I remember correctly, I think that the energy sword was originally usable in a very, VERY early build of Halo 1, when it was more of a third person shooter and it was being made for Mac.

Either way, I would still like to see it being usable, and in my opinion it being dual wieldable would be nice to see in Campaign and as an option in custom games.

If you were dual wielding with one, the lunge would have to be only the length of a normal melee attacks lunge for balance reasons.

Unless they massively change the way that Halo Reach multiplayer will play (I highly doubt it), its going to be more or less a bit like Halo 3 with tweaks. Dual wielding swords would be slightly redundant / not work as a result because:
A) its a one hit kill, having two isn't going to change anything
B) There may be two "weapon fire" buttons, but only one melee button, how will that work out?
C) Most maps don't have two swords, so it wouldn't be used much
D) In ffa or team swords where it could be used, it gives a huge advantage to players who pick up two swords because they can block and kill at the same time, don't see how they could balance it so that dual wielding swords is balanced with single wielding swords.

As for the first part of the question, of course Bungie is going to more or less ignore the setting and timezone of the campaign when creating the multiplayer to create a balanced and fun environment. Don't see why they wouldn't let us use the sword in campaign either, it is pretty popular.

I had thought of all of these at one point or another. There's also the problem that when dual wielding at the moment, you drop your weapon when you melee.

I'll do my best to come up with answers:

A) It would probably make getting multiple kills faster because you could lunge more rapidly
B) I got nothing for this one.
C) Two swords would be pretty devastating, it probably would be seen rarely and likely only in sword games.
D) It could be made so that when dual wielding, the time between lunges is that same as the time between melees (using B) with one sword. This would give the person with two an advantage (longer range) but still give the person fighting them a chance. The person with two smg's always has the advantage over the person with one anyway.

That's all I got

The Energy Sword is going to -probably*- be usable. As for dual wielding, a special kind of zealot might dual wield but I don't think you could. It's half useless and half overpowered. Just my opinion. Peace.

I actually would consider not purchasing the game if players can dual wield swords. Its a horrible concept and it makes no sense from a gameplay perspective.

I love Mute!

Two Words Halo ODST.
Its a pre. to Halo 3
And it's as Bubble Shields, brutes with upgraded armor and Gass warthog. etc.

I really don't think bungie would down grade their weapons. How they look yes, that they will down grade that. How it works, no.

The "recharge" from the sword lunge is you bringing the word down from the slice. Don't see how having two swords would change that at all, you still need to lower your swords.

Not the same thing. When dual wielding close ranged weapons, power drops by 25% and things get less accurate, and you can't use grenades (though with two 75% weapons you get roughly 150% power that is inaccurate and therefore hard to be efficient with it and the loss of grenades is major.) By single wielding, you aren't neccesarily as powerful, but you are more accurate, making you more efficient, and you can use grenades. That is balanced.

You can't take off 25% from a weapon that kills with one hit however, there no accuracy involved, so you have a situation where there is no pros but cons. Even with making the cooldown between lunges the same as single wielding's melee, there isn't anything big enough that the single wielder has other than grenades to balance this out.

But while bringing one sword down, you can lunge with the other

If they both can achieve the same speed that much is balanced. The other variable is the fact that one person has a longer range and the other has grenades. If the one blocks the person with the longer range, then they're on even grounds and we'll get the same sword fights we get at the moment. The difference is that the one with grenades can take out the other before they even get close Assuming they have two frags or one sticky and are spot one with they're aim. It could be balanced.

Also, does someone else want to take this side of the argument. I'm only doing it because no one else will. I would be just as quick to join the other side. I actually don't really care if you can dual wield or not, I'm in it for the debate

I am the leader of the Halo Machinima team TEAMHALOSWAT, or THS for short. Make sure to visit www.teamhaloswat.blogspot.com for THS news.

im preety sure youll be able to use the sword, if not, people are going to be mad.

as for dual-wield, i hope. if we cant, then we should see some elites with them (assuming were fighting elites)

Why is dual swords a likable idea? All you are doing is holding two instant kill weapons. If you want a sword with -blam!- balancing go play Halo 2.

  • 06.20.2009 1:31 PM PDT

I hadn't thought about the benefit of dual wielding in machinima. Gameplay aside, it could be cool to see

With swords as powerful as they are I see no upside to being able to dual wield them. Sure ti would look cool, but as far s game play mechanics go you couldn't do anything more with two swords than you can already do with one. At most you could swing two faster than one, but thats only if you don't use the one hit kill lunge attack, which is, lets be honest, the only reason you pick up the sword.

Please, no dual wielding Energy Swords.

Why do so many people want more gimmicks in the game?

  • 06.20.2009 1:45 PM PDT

What spectagon are you in?

it would be cool to have dual weldable swords but complicated. like could you double lunge or one lunge at a time. could you still lunge melee or no melee........ It would be complicated.

I feel like swords should only be wieldable to Elites in campaign, but multiplayer needs swords.

I thought I saw Brute Plasma rifles in one of the firefight videos, so who knows.

  • 06.20.2009 2:44 PM PDT

I hope they bring Halo to a realistic point. I hope we see people sliced in half, plasma burns, and limbs flight off if necessary. Dual wieldable swords only use would be if there are 2 people close to each other, and you could kill them both really fast.
