Subject: Will the silencer actually WORK like a silencer?

Wait, you actually are looking at this? Damn, I never look at these, at least on this site.

So, we get a silenced weapon (two, actually) in ODST. Will they work like silencers, or just be for kicks?

Before you read on just remember that I am NOT saying we should make Halo like any CoD game. I'm simply saying something about the game.

For instance. In CoD 4 and WaW if you shot a weapon without a silencer, you would show up as a dot on the radar, letting your whole enemy team know where you are. If you shot a weapon with a silencer, you wouldn't show up.

Now let me say how this would work in ODST. If you shot a silenced weapon and killed a grunt in one hit with it, and nobody was looking at that specific grunt, nobody would be alerted you were there, until they found the body and become aware that they are not alone(and NOT JUST FIND YOU RIGHT AWAY).

I think it would add more stealthy feel to the game. I mean, after all, the game is supposed to be a strategic game.

Thoughts?

Thanks, I always wanted to post this. I think it is just for style. I think it really wouldn't matter if it was silenced

yea probably for show.

  • 06.20.2009 3:28 PM PDT

I think it was shown in a video that it does. Not sure though.

  • 06.20.2009 3:28 PM PDT

I think that would be a cool feature to ODST. In the videos I've seen, I haven't seen any stealth kills.

  • 06.20.2009 3:29 PM PDT

Wow awesome post but i think it might actually be stealthy but any thoughts on removing it? :P But great well thought out thread

not necessarily. The halo 3 engine might recognize it just at another shot so the silencer defeats its stealth

Golf Wang. Brony.

Think about, it works.

If it doesn't all the Covenant patrols would just gang up on you, because your shots would echo throughout the streets.

The silencer also makes things sound sharper, I think.

Actually, the term Silencer is misleading, it should be called a suppressor, if you are familiar with firearms, you would know that Suppressors are used to hide the muzzle flash, and does not make the gun quieter, this is how modern firearms work, such as a Suppressed MP5. This also means that enemies in the area surrounding the firing of such a weapon would be alerted to the presence of a enemy combatant, but not the location.

I am aware that this could have changed within the 500 years time difference, but if you watch gameplay, the sound made by the gun is not quieter then the normal gun.

So please dont get you knowledge of weapons from CoD 4 and get it from real life.

Also, the silencer is generally used for indoor combat, as otherwise the loud firing systems of the guns may cause temporary or permanent deafness. Many games and films are misleading in this; they show the silencer as an almost silent way to kill someone, when in fact, the shot is roughly as loud as a car door slamming.

Not sure how it'll work in the game, though.

Idk why people make such a big deal about love. Just -blam!- everything you see, until you find the one you want to -blam!- for the rest of your life.

I assume it would be like assassinating with the hit in the back. if someone sees you they'll get you, if not they'll be on high alert

Get in the flask!

yeah i would agree with the silencer not showing up if you targeted someone say from a far distance because the silencer doesnt actually silence wepons fully in real life you can stop hear i slight pop so anyone in a... i dunno 5 meters ( 16.8 feet) radius would hear you. but yeah good topic

Tom Weaver

A silencer doesn't completely quiet the gun it reduces muzzle flash and slightly redcucing the sound, with a silencer a gun's sound measures at 5.2 decibeles, opposing a unsilenced gun at 5.4 decibeles.

I disagree. I always love sneaking around an enemy base and killing just one or two guys without anyone else even knowing, I'd be disappointed if something like that wasn't possibly in ODST.

Soffish for everyone!

Art and Halo = my life... pretty much.

When you play matchmaking on, say high ground and some1 has the SMG(s) you can here those things from across the map, but in the trailers, from up close the sound does sound softened, I doubt that it can be used for complete stealth though

  • 06.21.2009 7:31 AM PDT

Nah. Maybe it's not for stealth, but silencers can give you very low recoil. Maybe that's why they put silencers in.

  • 06.21.2009 7:50 AM PDT

that would be nice, but I think the way it works is, you can take out a squad (a brute and a few grunts) with silenced weapons then more squads won't hear and won't come find you,

and remember no gun is absolutely silent
