Armour isn't really their rank, more of their skill. Black is good aim with grenades, blue is good aim with a gun, red likes to play hide and seek, and gold is a good jumper and has stronger armour.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Elites:
-Blue (Spade Plate Helmet) = "rookie"
-Blue (Spike Plate Helmet) = greater "rookie"
-Maroon (Spade Plate Helmet) = veteran
-Maroon (Spike Plate Helmet) = greater veteran
-Cobalt (silvery blue, Spade Plate Helmet) = Stealth, AKA "Osoona"
-Cobalt (Spike Plate Helmet) = greater stealth
-Golden = Commander
-Black = Special Ops.

Jackals:
-Blue Shield = "rookie"
-Orange Shield = veteran
-I think the feather-top variations are stronger and higher-ranking than the helmet variations... I coulbe be wrong about that, though.

Grunts:
-Orange Armor = "rookie"
-Red Armor = veteran
-Black Armor = Secial Ops.
-I think the pointy-top (back of armor) variations are stronger and higher-ranking than the rounded-top variations... again, I could be wrong about that.

Hunters have no variations.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Please note that although the Black Armored Elites are called veterans one time in The Flood, they are really the Special Ops. Maroons are basically the real veterans, more or less.

Thanks for all this info about the covenant, in this post and others, Shai Hulud. You seem to know a lot about Halo.

Thanks again.

Blues are the rookies, maroons are veterans, inisibles are stealth, golds are the commandes, and the blacks are special operatives.
Is there a diffeence between a jackal with a yellow shield and one with a blue?

Some website also talks about marroon elites and purple elites, the marroon ones are supposed to be rare and better then the average purple one we see, but i havn't seen a difference in colour with any red ones

Blue - Beginner
Red - Vetern
Gold -
Black - Special Ops

I think the first two are said in the books...

yeh...i think we got the elite ranks covered!

Jackals however people seem to be more confused about... im not sure about the sheild ranks except that Yellow shields are the scouts, Red shields are Major Jackals, and blue shields must be special ops i think!

but i do want to point out that Jackals with that funny hair doo are much stronger than the egg head ones!

The only red I've ever seen is when I shoot at a jackal's shield with a plasma weapon. Nukem are you ok, or are you confused or something?

Shai Hulud, do you know for sure if the Spade or Spike helmet really have anything to do with rank? I don't remember seeing that anywhere in the books and I always thought they were just there so elites didn't all look so identical.

[edit] I just realized something! Shai Hulud is from Dune! praise the house of Atreties!

I have a full and accurate listing. (Using human equivalents)

Orange Pointed Shell Grunt - Rookie
Orange Cropped Shell Grunt- Private
Red Pointed Shell Grunt- Private First Class
Red Cropped Shell Grunt- Corporal
Blue Shield No helmet Jackal- Sergeant
Blue Shield Helmet Jackal- Staff Sergeant
Yellow Shield No Helmet Jackal- Master Sergeant?
Yellow Shield Helmet Jackal- Master Sergeant?
Blue Elite(Both types)- Commander, Officer
Hunter- Officer
Red Elite(Both types)- Lt Commander?, Officer
Black Pointerd Shell Grunt- Covenant Veteran
Black Cropped Shell Grunt- Covenant Veteran
Black Elite(Both types)- Covenant Veteran
Gold Elite- Field Commander

I ahev no idea where the Stealth Elites go. I'd assume they are between the Red and Blue Elite types.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

A few things:

1.) There are only two types of Jackal Shields: Blue, and Orange (Orange is Yellow, or Red, depending on what your eyes see).
2.) Blacks are Special Operations. They are veterans, but more specifically, they're Spec. Ops.
3.) Saying "minor" and "major" for blue and maroon Elites, orange and red Grunts, and the Jackals is much more accurate than the "rookie" and "veteran" that I said. I'll admit, "veteran" is misleading when used for the maroons, since veteran is more of a general term, rather than a specific one.
4.) There really are no red or purple Elites. Its more of a maroon color. Some people see it as red, some as purple, but there is no difference.
5.) I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure there's a difference between Elites' Spade and Spiked helmets, as well as feather-top and non-feather-top for the Jackals. From playing, it seems that the Spades are a little weaker and dumber than Spikes. And I think the feather-tops are stronger and a little smarter than non-feather-tops. Again, I could be wrong.
6.) There's definitely a difference between rounded and pointed Grunt armors.
7.) Its a wee bit more accurate to say Cobalt for the stealth, or "Ossoona" Elites, rather than simply saying "invisible." I only say this because Zuka 'Zamamee in The Flood acutually wore an invisibility field generator with his black armor during the Covenant raid on Alpha Base (the butte).
